Weretiger ECL

I'm trying to make sure I"M doing this right. My new character wants to play a weretiger. Not a problem. I open my DMG and it says there is an Level adjustment of 3 which , I thought, meant the charadcter could gain six levels of a class and be equivelant to a sixth level character. However, as I read some past enworld posts, it says the weretiger is closer to a sixth level adjustement.

Then, wizards has a weretiger racial class progression that would take me 9 levels to be a complete weretiger.

Who is right and what should her level be if she wants to be a ranger. She's looking at being a ranger.

What's the total ECL desired? What's the base race? Do you want the character to be a natural lycanthrope?

Natural lycanthrope: +2 ECL +HD
Natural weretiger: +2+6 HD= 8

A 1st-level human who is a natural lycanthrope is a 10th level character.

You see, being a lycanthrope carries a +2 Level Adjustment (if you're afflicted) or +3 Level Adjustment (if you're a natural). The reason for the difference is that natural lycanthropes have better DR and can spread the Curse.

BUT, on top of the Level Adjustment, a lycanthrope gains the HD of its animal form. So a weretiger has 6HD of "Tiger" (just like a regular tiger) and a +3 Level Adjustment on top of any class levels.

The Template Class over at the WotC site (written by Sean K Reynolds) offers you a way of playing a weretiger from 1st level. Until you gain at least one level in "Tiger", your alternate form is just cosmetic (i.e., you gain no additional abilities from your tiger/hybrid form).

So, in order to be a full weretiger, you must be Weretiger 3/Tiger 6.

Lycanthropes have to account for both the LA of what kind of lycanthrope they are (natural or afflicted), and the hit dice of the base animal both.

Tigers have 6HD.

Level Adjustment: Same as the base creature +2 (afflicted) or +3 (natural). In addition, a lycanthrope’s character level is increased by the number of racial Hit Dice the base animal has.

The character won't be able to take their first class level until 10th. Currently they will be a straight natural weretiger with its 6HD and +3LA

Actually, memory serving, you -have- to take one class level in something, because of the base creature being a 1hd humanoid.

So the character would have to start off 10th level
