D&D General What’s The Big Deal About Psionics?

Given that Aberrations include some of the premier psychic entities in the game's lore, such as Illithids and Aboleths, I'm afraid we're quite stuck with them. If a new Psionic system did emerge, there'd quickly be a new "Psionic Mind Flayer" to go with it. I mean, I saw it happen in Second Edition and Third Edition, after all.
Like I said, I don't mind (some) aberrations being psychic/psionic. But I don't want the baseline of psionics to be aberration-based.

but are we likely to get more than one?
I think so.

4e had four classes, 3e had many.

For 5e, what really matters is we psionic fans need to present a clear idea of what we want in the form of a plan that can reasonably meet the needs of our diverse fandom.

In the past, the designers have had to guess what might satisfy us with limited success. But if we can give them a doable plan, that enjoys significant support from the fandom, I think the designers would be thrilled to make it official.

We can probably squeeze most of the needs into two classes. If a third one becomes necessary, fine.

Psionics should be at-will/short rest based. That's my complaint with the push to make them just spells. At that point, why even bother wasting the space to print it up?

4E got flack for all classes playing the same, but putting almost everyone on a bog standard 9 level daily caster track repeats the problem.

Part of why I like Level Up's approach to Warlocks.

You can currently make a Psionic Warlock. It's not -perfect-, but because the class works from the ground up on short rests and spell points it feels very different from your standard Wizard, at the very least.

Judging from what I saw of Monsters of the Multiverse, it looks like WotC wants to get away from short rest mechanics, so I doubt we'll see a short rest Psion.

True. And. I have no idea what the Warlock chassis looks like without short rests.

WOTC kinda screwed up the amount of expected encounters per day that many groups actually run. Their opinions was to either giive variants of long rest features and optional progression of spell losts for shorter days OR turn short rests stuff into novable long rest stuff.

Warlocks would get 3 times proficiency mod slots per long rest. But they can't use more that X slots in an hour.

I totally wouldn't mind a 5E Psion getting their own versions of Invocations ala the Warlock. Heck, the Warlock/Hexblade of 5E started out, IIRC, as a Psi-Warrior when the details were being worked out on its creation.
