El Mahdi
Muad'Dib of the Anauroch
I loved the preview articles and the preview designer books (Worlds and Monster, Characters and Classes), they had me strongly anticipating 4E. I was very excited by the design philosophy and concepts stated in those releases.
So I bought the core books (4E PHB, DMG, and MM).
And I was sadly disapointed. So I decided to stay with my houseruled 3.5E. However, I didn't consider the books a waste. I liked a lot of the concepts, I just didn't like how they were applied and the overall feel the new system had. So I "stole" some of the mechanics and concepts for my houseruled 3.5E system, including:
Death and Dying concept
Skill Challenges
Consolidated Skills
Increased Hit Points at 1st level
Action Points
Healing Surges and Natural Healing concepts
Minions
Powers for non-spellcasting classes (use 3.5E spells for magic users but at-will casting)
Rituals
Other 4E products I bought:
Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide - I'm an FR junky, I can't resist the official material. The book itself was pretty good, and I like most of the changes made to the world. The changes I don't like are easily taken out or ignored for my games. I was disapointed in the absence of a timeline of the Spellplague years, and downright

ed off that the only way to get timeline updates is with a DDI subscription
, but overall it's a pretty good product and worth my money. Still not decided on whether I want the new Forgotten Realms Players Guide but, as stated earlier, I am an FR junky
.
H3: Pyramid of Shadows - I bought this because the previews and synopsis made it sound like an extremely interesting, non-linear, and well written adventure. When I read it, I was very impressed and glad I bought it. An absolute top-notch adventure. Even though I'm not running 4E, a good adventure to me is system neutral. I can change stat blocks and mechanics to what works in my system without too much trouble. A good adventure with good plots is worth it's weight in gold, irregardless of system.
Scepter Tower of Spellgard - Decent adventure. Not the greatest but mostly bought it because of the aforementioned FR addiction.
Products I haven't bought and why:
Adventurers Vault - Looks interesting and I'll probably buy it, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
DM Screen - Not running 4E games, so don't need it.
Dungeon Tiles - Don't use Dungeon Tiles, and wouldn't buy a product with limited numbers of tiles - might buy this as a .pdf. But, there are lots of companies that make tile pdf's that I feel are a lot better, for better prices. I feel that WoTC should make tiles specific to each adventure and include them as part of the adventure product (along with full page and poster sized, keyed and unkeyed maps - and full page printable handouts).
4E Character Sheets - Joke product of the century. Completely useless unless you are a collector. Anyone else who bought these got robbed.
4E Premium Dice - Same as above. If you are collector, they're worth it. If not, you got robbed.
Against the Giants Boosters - I don't buy randomized minis. I don't play DDM, I only use minis for RPG's. I buy the minis I need as singles from any of the various secondary market internet merchants.
H1: Keep on the Shadowfell & H2: Thunderspire Labrynth - Was not impressed by the synopsis. Did not seem like any more original adventures than I already have stacks of. Not worth my money.
Future products:
P1: King of the Trollhaunt Warrens - maybe, don't know enough about it yet.
Deluxe PHB, DMG, MM - Not a chance. Slightly better packaging and materials, not including errata, and triple the price I actually paid for the original core books - IMO, unless you are a collector, they are an absolute rip-off. Edit: I was incorrect about the errata - all errata, updates, and rewrites are to be included (according to Ask Wizards 9-22), however still not worth the price to me.
Draconomicon - Pass. I have more than enough MM's, and the original Draconomicon, that I really don't see any reason why I need this. I'm not using 4E, and only got the 4E MM for the underlying math, so I don't need this product.
Manual of the Planes - Pass. I have more than enough Planar Cosmology material from past editions, that even with the changes in 4E cosmology, I feel I really don't need it. Besides, I prefer my own cosmologies anyways.
P2: Demon Queen's Enclave - maybe, same as P1, I don't know enough about it yet.
Martial Power - maybe
Open Grave: Secrets of the Undead - Pass. I have more than enough "undead" sourcebooks and material to last a lifetime (or un-lifetime).
Dungeon Delve - Probably not.
P3: Assault on Nightwyrm Fortress - maybe, same as P1 & P2.
PHB II - Probably.
Arcane Power - maybe
MM II - Probably not.
E1: Deaths Reach & E2: Kingdom of the Ghouls - maybe, same as P1-P3.
Eberron Campaign Guide & Eberron Players Guide - Nope. Not an Eberron fan.
Divine Power - maybe
And for the record, 3pp 4E products:
Advanced Players Guide by Ari Marmell (Expeditious Retreat) - Absolutely. Would sell myself into servitude if necessary to get anything written by Ari. He's an absolute class act and the previews are completely awesome.
