What are the cliched "first session ever" moments?

Well, we did play today.. but the girlfriend did not. She had a bunch of last minute things to do before our canada day camping trip, so she hung out with us for our pre game, and then headed out. Which actually worked out - I got to throw my meat grinder combat at the PCs today, which had most of the group bloodied (fun!).

I'm thinking of having her character start off with Amnesia of a sort, with the plotline set up that, as she develops her character, she simply "remembers" stuff about herself. The whole thing will probably be in a dungeon, so I'm going to try to use some of the dungeon-y goodness.

She'll be playing a companion character elf druid, with only a few powers. And they'll be very simplified (I like the idea of one shapeshift form, as selected by her... she liked the "unicorn" idea I mentioned to her).

I'm going to diverge slightly from the suggestions so far:

Rather than playing it safe and ending up pedestrian... go for evocative, exciting, set-piece encounters! Like the bridge of Khazad-Dum in the mines Moria, the boulder trap in Indiana Jones, or the garbage compactor in the death star.

Some of these were already mentioned, but whatever. I took a more mechanical view.

* The party's first crit! (in general)
* Your PC's first crit! (you, specifically)
* The monster's first crit against the party.
* The monster's first crit against your PC.

* The first time your PC drops a monster...
* ... in one hit...
* ... from unbloodied (if 4e).

* The first time a PC goes down.
* The first time your PC goes down.

* The first time a PC dies.
* The first time your PC dies.
* The first TPK.

* The first time a PC returns from the dead.
* The first time you(r party) returns a PC from the dead, and it's not a crippling financial blow nor does it force you to take on a special quest. (In other words -- you know the spell/ritual Raise Dead.)

* The first time an enemy you thought was dead re-appears.

* The first intra-party conflict. (Generally halflings and/or rogues are involved.)

* The first time your party gets ambushed while resting...
* ... and you don't have your armor on...
* ... but you win anyway!

* The first time your party successfully executes an ambush against the monsters.

* The first time you encounter a dragon.
* The first time you encounter a dragon, and fight it voluntarily...
* ... and get your butt kicked... (* or / later *)
* ... and win!

* The first time you travel to another plane...
* ... that isn't as easily accessible as 4e's Shadowfell or Feywild. It has to involve planar travel magic, and be a plane that isn't simply a different version of the Prime.

* The first time you decide to try your hand at DMing...
* ... and you kind of suck...
* ... but later you get better.

* The first time you introduce new players to the game.

Congratulations! The circle is now complete.

Eh, women like imaginary sex too. My experience is that it's fairly common (though certainly not universal) for first-time female players to want to "vamp" NPCs, either for the party's advantage or for their own entertainment.

Of course, being her boyfriend, you have to be careful not to give the impression that you're cutting her special breaks if she does this. :)
It has certainly been the case in every game that I have run (that had imaginary sex). If anything, female players seem more likely to likely to go after the imaginary sex, in part because I suspect that the male players have a hard time picturing me as a buxom tavern wench.... :p

The Auld Grump, not a buxom tavern wench, I must assure you.

I've got her character ready to go. She's going to be focused primarily on using an at-will attack and an at-will utility. The idea is for her to pair up nicely with another character in the party, whose player has consented to be a buddy/mentor to show her the ropes.

I remember (vaguely) of having me character throw a battle axe and killing a hobgoblin. I may have to bring that back.
