What are you going to do with d20 Future?

I was wanting to make all kinds of things for d20 modern, but those who have tried seem to think it's a publishing money pit. I don't know it's true, but...
RPG Objects has several Modern books out: Blood and Guts, Blood and Vigilance, Blood and Fists, etc.

I just personally believe that Cyberware shouldn't have any real drawbacks unless something goes wrong during the 'installation'. The SW Hero's Guide cyberware was pretty close to what I was looking for.

Unfortunately, if you do that, then you have to throw game balance out the window. It should cost a feat or something (but please, no stat penalties!).

Why not let it cost just money. After all, it's just equipment. Let it be part of a character's total wealth, the way a gaunlet of ogre power is, fx.

Just double the price for not taking up space (or maybe it does take up space and it's really just a form of 'magic' item)

:)

Since all 'real life' cybernetics usually take time and training to use properly (or at least recover from), I think that cybernetics/bionics and the like should use an advanced class.

Just offer a certain amount of cyberware per level.

Also, a feat could allow some cyberware for characters who just want a 'little something extra'.

Why a class? Because cyberware IS equipment, but it's equipment that takes special training to use. Like a spellcaster and wands...

This way, you get equipment AND game balance.

No, that wouldn't work well. For starters, you can't use Wealth as a balancing technique. You don't wrap up a Wealth bonus of +30 and dump it on a cyberarm... you make a deal with so-and-so company to pay for it (and now you owe them something). However, that's not a mechanical balancing tool.

Second, I've never seen cybergear that isn't powerful. If you're going to take yourself to a surgeon and get yourself cut open and spend three weeks recovering... it had better be worth it. This means you'll get a significant bonus. Using Alternity as the main example (since they'll probably use those pieces of gear) you can get Strength bonuses, (natural?) armor bonuses, skil enhance programs (up to a +3 bonus on skill checks, attack rolls, initiative and so forth). It's not just another piece of gear and so can't be balanced the same way.

Third, if it becomes like magic items that sort of defeats the purpose of playing D20 Modern/Future.

Alternity used to use a skill point cost; however, it didn't scale with the amount or quality of the cybergear, and skills were even more important in Alternity than in D20 Modern. (They might as well have been called character points.)

If I pick it up, it will be the first WOTC product I have bought since the Menace Manual...

I hope it is good, and that they have worked out some of the D20M kinks...

I don't think d20 Future is going to revise the core rules. So whatever kinks is in the core rules will remain unless it is unsuitable for futuristic campaigns.

I can't wait for this game to get here! The first thing that I am going to do use to design a Halo campaign.

As I'm playing through co-op Halo with a friend right now, this idea sounds particularly attractive. I agree: Halo would make a fun game, particularly if you can model some of the elements that make it unique (like the shields, which would be crucial if you wanted to play Master Chief-style characters).

Thanks for the idea, Mythtify -- it's certainly made me want to take a good long look at d20F when it comes out. :)

Make you a deal: Find me 150 people that will swear they will buy the product, and I'll get right on making them in PDF and print.
I don't know what number I am, but I've purchased (and will continue to purchase) even WotC Modern product so far, and even some of the peripheral publishers of d20M. So have at it.
