What are your Halflings like?

My NPC halflings have all been cockneys so far. That was an Eberron game where the PCs only met city halflings, not the dino riders.

The only halfling I've played was a bit like a Joe Pesci character, extremely violent.

Voted other. Why would I want to restrict myself to one type of halfling?

I present my Halflings as a comic-relief take-off on Tolkien. Where Tolkien's Hobbits were an homage to English country dwellers, my Halflings are a parody of American Rednecks. They're pudgy, superstitious, maudlin, thieving and xenophobic. They wear mullets, make moonshine, have sex with their relatives, smoke weeds, and eat too much pork fat. Their religion is a parody of American Tent Revival Christianity, and their fat, bigoted Sheriffs are infamous.

All that being said, I think that the baseline presentation in the rulebooks should pretty much be as per Tolkien.
 

I like my halflings Eberron style. 4E's version of the halfling doesn't offend me, but neither did the 3E version. I've never been a big fan of the "hobbit" in D&D. A portly midget with hairy feet never appealed to me, as a player or DM. It's fine for Tolkien, I just never thought it was a great fit for D&D. That being said, if a player was inclined to have such a character, I wouldn't object.

Other: non-existent.

Other than Dark Sun or Eberron, I have yet to see a version of halflings that add value to the game. Kender actually were value-subjective.

I like Hobbits, but some of my players like the 3E halflings, so we say that they live in towns and amongst humans. Paunches and shoes are optional. It's kind of like a cultural and racial divide, I guess.
 


I voted "other".

"Hobbit"-style halflings for the majority of "civilian" NPCs.

3e-style halflings for the adventurers and villains. ("Adventurers" here can include soldiers, law enforcement, or pretty much any halfling with an active lifestyle.)

I don't see any "competition" here between the two visions.

I'm not too fond of a few changes I heard about 4e halflings, mainly the "fascination with shiny objects" thing as it's too kender-like. I'll cross that out if I see that in the PH. The water thing is just annoying; I don't want to have to learn a whole new set of rules just to create a halfling village. I like the new height, and assume most of the images are of adventurer halflings rather than chubby NPCs.
 

As I just wrote in another thread, my halflings are called the Hannumin, or just the Hannu, and they're a race of collie-dog riding Abolitionists who excel at kung-fu.

What can I say? My players seem to like them.
 

Wearing hunting masks. Throwing boomerangs. Flying into a berserker rage as they call on their animal spirits. While riding dinosaurs.

Eberron halflings all the way!
