what books do you guys recomend to start a campaign in Scarred Lands?

The Scarred Lands DM Screen has a lot of key Player information about the Races in Scarred lands. I don't have it, as I'm holding out fo rthe 3.5 version, but I'd want that if I were running SL right now.

Creature Collections I & II have a lot of key monsters.

Other than that, you may want the Scarredlands Ghelspad Gazatteer for its pull out map.

Beyond that, it really depends on how much detail and crunch you want (particularly in terms of PrCs and stuff). I'd proabably say Relics and Rituals I &II are next of importance, as they are very good works whether or not you play in SL.

Choose an area that you'd like to run in from the Ghelspad campaign setting book - then see if there is a matching product for that region - eg Hollowfaust, Mithril, Calastia, etc.

CCrevised, R&R, etc can all be useful, and add flavour, but it depends on how much crunch and how much fluff you like.

Have fun.

I'm obviously not very biased, but I would say for a DM:

CC Revised, CC3 and possibly CC2. R&R 1 and R&R2 are also essential.

The other sourcebooks... you can take as you go. Just use the SLCS: Ghelspad to the best of your avantage.

As for being a player, definitely pick up the Player's Guide series. Course you, as DM, might want to look over them as well for ideas.

I know SLCS is 3.5, but what about the others? would there much difference between 3 and 3.5 versions of Mithril or Hollowfaust. Or would there be a lot of work converting them?

CC revised and CC3 are 3.5 as are the players guides.

CCI & II Relics and Rituals I & II, hollowfaust, mithril et al. are 3.0

Most 3.0 stuff is not too hard to convert to 3.5. Watch for buffing spell durations, eliminate scry requirements from prestige classes, and convert the monsters DR and you are close enough for stuff to work fine in 3.5.

Does anyone kow if these books will be revised as well. I would hate to spend my money on them only to find out that they are being rereleased in a few months.

I doubt it very much.

As mentioned above, 3.0 to 3.5 conversions are not too difficult when even necessary.

The creature collection (CC1) was the very first third party book to carry the d20 logo - It was released even before the 3.0 monster manual. It had a lot of technical errors. That was one BIG reason for the revision. Another was that they sold out of this book, and figured they may as well fix the errors and update it for the already announced 3.5 version of the game.

As far as I know ( and I pay attention to the subject ), no other revisions for this line have been announced

edit:

The SLCS ( Ghelspad) is NOT 3.5, but it is mostly flavor anyway so it shouldn't matter to you.

If you are looking for a place to start that contains details for a city your PC's could use as a base of operation, consider going with Mithril. This city is a little more conventional than the necromantic ruled city of Hallowfaust, the vice ridden city of Shelzar, or the underground city of the Dwarves, Burok Torn. You can explore these places later if they interest you. From the published material so far, you definitely notice that there is a heavy emphasis on Eastern Ghelspad, so if you are the type of DM that likes a lot of available setting books to reference, again, I would reccomend basing a campaign there.

and since I'm on the subject of SL - I just got CC3 today - looks good so far on my initial flip through. Definitely more extra planar beings than I thought. Less focus on Termana than I thought...

Biggie,

Maybe CC4 will have a better focus. ;)

But the ONLY 3.5 stuff to get some kind of revision is CC1 as CC Revised. I do know Relics and Rituals 3 will have some 3.5 stuff involved and possibly retooling for 3.5. Other than that I know of no other revisions and so Biggie is correct.

I do know there's been a lot of call for either a Darakenee or Durrover sourcebook. So possibly that might come up in 2004/2005.
