What can you Trip with ?

My DM from re-reading the rules has understood that you can only trip someone with weapons that specifically indicate trip capacity.

Like the Kopesh that is stats wise is same as Longsword... and needs exotic I think... he says since it describes it being useful for trip its possible... but you cant trip with a longsword for example. (Kopesh doesnt have description like... Drop in order avoid trip back)

My understanding is that trip is accomplished in combat thru kicking and pushing.... so its not unarmed (no AOO) because the person has a weapon... and that weapons that have the Trip description means their magical and wpn focus bns can be used for trip. They usually can also be dropped in order to avoid being tripped back.

Third version could be weapons are used in trips... some just are better.

What view is correct ? What do you calculate in the trip attack ? What are the trip rules ?

You can trip with a gythka, a thri-kreen weapon. It does 1d8 damage (two-headed), and is Large. It can even be thrown like a shortspear (at least in 2e, they took this away in 3e).

trippy!

IIRC it goes as follows:

If you are wielding a weapon that says you can trip, you can make a trip attack with that weapon, and if you fail, your opponent gets to try to trip you (but you can avoid this if you drop the weapon).

If you do not have a weapon that says you can trip, then you trip with your feet. This is an unarmed attack and may provoke an attack of opportunity (even if you are weilding a non-trip weapon -- presumably your feet are vulnerable). But the attack of opportunity can be avoided if you have improved unarmed strike. If you fail on this trip, your opponent gets to try to trip you (and this cannot be avoided, since you cannot drop your feet).

Hope that helps.

Yes, you trip with whatever you have at hand. You can do it armed or unarmed without penalty, but some weapons, as described in the PHB, are better.

If I trip unarmed do I get a AOO on me ? or only the trip back attack if I fail ? The Trip rules dont exactly demand special weapons or impr.unarmed as written....

No, it's not an Unarmed Attack, it's a Trip Attack.

The rules for Trip Attack does not require you to have any weapon at hand, nor does it give you any bonus or penalty for being armed.

Naturally a Trip attack is an unarmed attack which does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

If a Trip is performed with a weapon, only those specific weapons which indicate their usefulness in this attack can be used.

This question has been answered by the Sage in the past.

cool. what about disarm?

Ok, I can buy that.

Did the sage say if this special status would also apply to someone who 1) has the improved disarm feat (avoiding the Aoo for attempting a disarm), AND 2) does NOT have the improved unarmed combat feat (which would have allowed her to avoid the Aoo for attacking while unarmed (except for unarmed trips, which don't provoke an Aoo anyhow)), AND 3) is unarmed, AND 4) is trying to disarm an armed opponent?

Just curious

I am not seeing why an unarmed trip does not draw an attack of opportunity for being unarmed. It is a trip, yes, which does not provoke, but attacking in any form unarmed (accept magic touch attacks) is still attacking unarmed which = AoO in my book.

We also allow trip attacks with most weapons if the attacker has high ground and is fighting on foot, like on the upper deck on the bow of a ship and you are reaching from the middle deck.
