They stopped sucking in 4e. It's basically a sigh of relief that that didn't get reverted with all the 'Make Paladin's LG party dictators again' stuff that was going around in Next Discussion.
shudders I got so tired of having to try and enforce Paladin roleplay due to some vague sense that it was a balancing mechanic.

I think people who had such strict views of the LG Paladin's morales/views are your own worst enemies....

I had paladin's often in AD&D with the LG alignment requirement and no one ever complained about "I can't play this" or the paladin's player "No, I'm a paladin, you can't."

But, let's not argue about that, it's just my experience. ;)

in 3e, it's right there in the Paladin's code that they won't associate with people who offend their morals.

Given that D&D is the game of home invasion, that should mean no Paladins, but what it really meant was 'call your Pally first, so as to dictate what other people play'.

Certainly, in the 2e days, it was worse. I remember joining a new group, making a Paladin, which was approved by the DM, who didn't tell me that two members of the party were evil. They instantly started plotting my demise upon meeting me.

As luck would have it, the DM was a permissive and wishy washy Monty Haul type, with no control over his players. This not only created the situation where I was attacked three sessions in, but also turned it into a total fiasco when the other players found out that the DM considered a Holy Avenger "appropriate starting equipment" for a 7th level PC!

I killed both my attackers, both of whom went to their dooms whining about the wording of "dispel magic" and how "unfair" 50% magic resistance was. Then I took their stuff, hoofed it to the nearest church of Torm, and left the game.

I was told by next session both characters were "miraculously" revived, and recovered all their gear, and that they had been allowed to hunt my character down and kill them off-camera.

Though I did get Paladins banned from that game, so I guess that's a thing.
