Certainly, in the 2e days, it was worse. I remember joining a new group, making a Paladin, which was approved by the DM, who didn't tell me that two members of the party were evil. They instantly started plotting my demise upon meeting me.
As luck would have it, the DM was a permissive and wishy washy Monty Haul type, with no control over his players. This not only created the situation where I was attacked three sessions in, but also turned it into a total fiasco when the other players found out that the DM considered a Holy Avenger "appropriate starting equipment" for a 7th level PC!
I killed both my attackers, both of whom went to their dooms whining about the wording of "dispel magic" and how "unfair" 50% magic resistance was. Then I took their stuff, hoofed it to the nearest church of Torm, and left the game.
I was told by next session both characters were "miraculously" revived, and recovered all their gear, and that they had been allowed to hunt my character down and kill them off-camera.
Though I did get Paladins banned from that game, so I guess that's a thing.
