My first thought was a green firebreathing knightfighting dragon.

Then I thought "Ok, that's the iconic dragon, now for the iconic D&D dragon" and big old red popped up.

Which proved that D&D just isn't iconic fantasy, but I'm totally ok with that.

Sort of off topic:

I was really happy/pleased that the artists for the D&D3 dragons used the AD&D1 illustrations as the example of what the various species looked like. You can recognize the similarities in the "old" and "new" dragons.

If we're talking dragons in general, then it's green.

I'll bet if one were to round up all the images of dragons ever created (books, magazines, movies, cartoons, etc.), there'd be an enormous emphasis on the green dragon over any other colour dragon.

I thought "Pseudodragon", but that's just because I finished writing a post in an online game where I play one. After that, I thought "Red" and voted for that.

I'd say red--that's the only color to appear on the cover of a rulebook prior to D&D3E, isn't it?

Though, if i could've voted for more than one, i'd say red and silver. With blue, black, and white tied for a very distant 3rd. Because when i think of D&D dragon, the only colors i really think of are silver, red, blue, black, and white. Not really sure why.

Green Blue and Black have all graced Rulebook covers.

Definitely red, like the red Basic Set. Then again, the Expert Set had a nice cover that I had a posted of on my wall that kinda stuck with me.

I was conditioned by the D&D basic set cover featuring Conan clone versus red dragon, so I voted red.

Most of the historical/folkloric stuff I've seen features green dragons.

Well, my first thought re: D&D dragons is an old booklet I have that has what is obviously a red dragon, except it's printed in blue ink.

So ... purple?

Dragons generally, tho, are dark green-black, with yellow stomachs, and breathe fire.

Vermithrax was red, tho, wasn't he? He was the first dragon I remember seeing in a film that actually looked like what a dragon should look like.
