Recently I have been thinking back about just how big a part of my life Dungeons & Dragons and gaming in general has been. I am 38 and started playing in the late 70's and have been playing RPGs in one form or another ever since. My little brother first introduced me to D&D and I have to say that it was one of the best things has ever happened to me. I know that sounds a little corny but let me explain.
The group of friends I have now I have been with since highschool and I initially met them through D&D. We are still all very close and still game every other weekend (wive's permitting of course
) and I feel very special to have such a close group of 'best' friends and I think that the gaming is what has kept us all in close contact.
My 'little' brother has always struggled with dyslexia. When we first started to play D&D he had an absolutely horrible time trying to read/write. I honestly believe that D&D gave him the desire and enthusiasm to read/write and I also believe that it has helped him immensley since those early days where he would dread doing homework because he had such a difficult time.
Now that I think more on it, I find that D&D has had a huge effect on who I am today. It is interesting how something so innocuous as a small box with some dice, books and a crayon can have such a long lasting and profound affect on a person. I believe that almost every facet of who I am and what I like to do has been somewhat formed or at least touched by Dungeons & Dragons, from what I like to read, movies I like to watch and the people I like to spend time with and how I like to spend that time.
