What D&D and gaming in general has done for me...

Recently I have been thinking back about just how big a part of my life Dungeons & Dragons and gaming in general has been. I am 38 and started playing in the late 70's and have been playing RPGs in one form or another ever since. My little brother first introduced me to D&D and I have to say that it was one of the best things has ever happened to me. I know that sounds a little corny but let me explain.

The group of friends I have now I have been with since highschool and I initially met them through D&D. We are still all very close and still game every other weekend (wive's permitting of course ;) ) and I feel very special to have such a close group of 'best' friends and I think that the gaming is what has kept us all in close contact.

My 'little' brother has always struggled with dyslexia. When we first started to play D&D he had an absolutely horrible time trying to read/write. I honestly believe that D&D gave him the desire and enthusiasm to read/write and I also believe that it has helped him immensley since those early days where he would dread doing homework because he had such a difficult time.

Now that I think more on it, I find that D&D has had a huge effect on who I am today. It is interesting how something so innocuous as a small box with some dice, books and a crayon can have such a long lasting and profound affect on a person. I believe that almost every facet of who I am and what I like to do has been somewhat formed or at least touched by Dungeons & Dragons, from what I like to read, movies I like to watch and the people I like to spend time with and how I like to spend that time.

D&D was just a natural progression for me.

i already played wargames.

i already played lets pretend

i already had an interest in reading books on fantasy and war.

it just made sense.

d&d has a big impact on my life as well. I started only seven or eight years ago though. It does influence my movies, books, etc. Every cool movie I see I often relate in terms of d20. My best friend (rest in peace) who got into gaming when I did was burried last summer with the group's best d20. I think It did cause me to read more.

I already played magic, but no other RPGs or wargames. A friend and I, when we were much younger, would draw maps of levels for Commander Keen and run each other through them. I guess that was my first experience with role playing, although at the time I didn't realize it.

D&D has allowed me to explore steam tunnels and worship demons... ;)

As a person who is extremely analytical and not very creative, D&D has given me the motivation to excercise that other half of my brain trying to come up with fun adventures for my group. It is still incredibly hard work, but I keep working at it and I am better at it now than I was just a few years ago.

It's killed years worth of time that I would have otherwise spent doing something productive, and wasted tons of money I would have otherwise spent on real-life adventure...
