What D&D and gaming in general has done for me...

It's killed years worth of time that I would have otherwise spent doing something productive, and wasted tons of money I would have otherwise spent on real-life adventure...

Carl

And yet I couldn't go without it!

Like watching TV or knitting pot holders.

Or maybe playing sports until I blew out my knee, and subsequently drowned my sorrows in beer and doritos, lamenting my glory days.

Instead I can drown my sorrows in pizza and mountain dew, waxing nostalgic for the days of 1e and the classic dungeons.

I am a gamer geek of the first order. I live, breathe, eat and sleep gaming. :) Which is not to say that I don't do anything else- just that I do a lot of gaming and gaming-related activities. Gaming has certainly influenced my taste in movies and books, and almost all my friends are gamers as well.

Gaming has helped develop my speaking skills, my ability to teach others, leadership skills, etc. Roleplaying really expands your mind, imho.

Real life adventure is over-rated!

I second the sentiment of the thread -- it's been hugely influential and entertaining for me over the decades.

D&D has allowed me to meet women :D

Hadn't even realized.

The first time a met my wife was when we both went to play at the same game.

DM was major a***** & didn't even know the rules, so I never showed up again.

About a year later, I met her again & she said how she tried RPG's but didn't like them.

(That would be the a****** running that game).

I invited her to join one of my games & she's been a gamer ever since.

And we've been happily married as well.

I vividly remember sitting on my bedroom floor, fifth grade, having my mom teach me ratios and percents so I could properly apply the dragon subdual rules from the 1E Monster Manual.

Big influence, from friends to reading to professional writing. Love it. My life would be profoundly different without it!

My taste in movies, books, games and even friends has been shaped by my love of this game. My wife is a gamer and gaming is one of the reason we got together.
The best part is I am now passing on the passion of this game to my children. My boys love playing the "Fighting Monsters Game".
