What d20 Purchases to you Regret?

You know, I mentioned the Book of Strongholds & Dynasties, and I stand by my assessment (subjective and personal though it is). However, it has a lot of potential. If the author gets to put together a web enhancement to shore it up and make it work (unbreak it), I think it might be very good at achieving the purpose it lists on the back cover, instead of being on my "this was a waste of money" category. (You listening, Mongoose? :)

Fair is fair, after all, and my experience with the author was very positive.


EDIT: And just how people can say they didn't like Manual of the Planes is beyond me. I loved Dieties & Demigods too :) Gamers are really as diverse as any other group it seems!

Desperately Regret: Epic Level Handbook -- it is runny monkey-crap between two covers.

Sorta Regret: Psionics Handbook -- I'm thrashing out a hybrid of the 2e-3e Psi-point mechanics cos the 3e rules bug me..


Sorta Like: D20 Modern -- not fond of the unarmed HTH rules and dubious about the gunplay rules.

REALLY Like: Sidewinder, Tome Of Horrors, ALL Polyhedron Mini-Games and Arcana Unearthed.

City of Freeport - too cute for my taste

Second World Sourcebook - Nice ideas, but never used any of it, and I bought it for full price

Just about all AEG one word books. Yeash, I should have learned, but I kept hoping they'd get better. (Exception being Mercenaries, which didn't really have much to do with the title, but is a decent PHB expansion)

Mercenaries: Born of Blood (from OWC)- Woof. Woof Woof! For a book that was delayed for so long, the final version felt like a rough draft. Again, I paid full price

Most Fast Forward products. They have great ideas, but terrible executions. I did like their encyclopedia of angels. And while the stats were rubbish, I did also like their demons & devils books, at least they didn't slander my religion, like Green Ronin's devil books did.

All the Dragonstar books other than the first two. Quality is just terrible. Raw Recuits was okay, but...

Village of Briarton - Sigh, I bought this one twice, actually. But once would have been more than enough. It's okay, but almost none of the poeple in the village have any relationship to each other - they're like a group of random NPCs.

Experts - this was actually a neat book, but my dogs ate it. Apparently there is something about the paper it used that is very appealing to puppies.

The Assassin's Handbook. Gah. Most of the book is not about assassins, but some bizzare organization that I have no use for.

Wow! It seems as if everyone who's mentioned "The Scarred Lands" has put in into their "regret" list. Is it really THAT bad? If so, why'd you dudes buy it in the first place? Not to harp on any of you, but I generally page through books prior to buying them to make sure it's something that I won't regret buying later on in life.

As for my regrets? The 3.0 stuff which includes the core books and the Psionics Handbook. This is because I'm a "on and off" gamer and haven't actually played in 3 years! All of a sudden, there's 3.5?!?! WTF? And a new Psionics book coming out already?! Sh*t!

Though I am pleased with the 'Creature Collection I' book that I have. Why? Because it's interesting and not due for a 3.5 upgrade any time soon! LoL

All the Spycraft stuff I bought. I ran one adventure.


Very glad I got:

Arcana Unearthed. It came just when I was burnt out on regular D&D.

Some of the "regrets" being posted are lists of items purchasers haven't used. I can easily understand someone getting SL material, then not using it because their gaming group didn't want to run in SL. Just my two cents...

THE SPLATS
Wizards did an excellent of upholding the dedication to poor quality that TSR gave us with the kit-splats of yesteryear. Six pages of errata on Sword & Shaft alone. Quite the accomplishment. I liked some of the ranger-oriented PrC's from Master of the Wild. That's about it.

Deities & Demigods
Completely and utterly pointless book. Not only is there no thought to put some material in here that might in some way actually be useful prior to epic levels, but it's not even useful at epic levels because they went and published the damn thing a month before the Epic Level Handbook. It's a bit much to accept that there are mortals who are more accomplished warriors, more knowledgable masters of magic, and more divinely-powered clerics(!!!) than the gods, who stop at 20th level in any class.

Urban Arcana
It's not an altogether bad book, but it didn't seem to occur to the designers that they needed to offer up something other than a retread of kobold-bashing, chest-looting, fireball-tossing D&D in a modern setting, replete with magic items, monsters, spells, organizations, et al reworked as possible to give them a modern coating of paint (e.g. "demonic armor" becomes "demonic leather jacket").

Creature Collection II
Got this book for a discount at DragonCon for the birthday of a fellow DM, and found out I'd gotten his birthday off by an almost perfect six months off. I thought I might get at least some use out of it, but in typical White Wolf fashion it's all fluff and flavorful monsters that might be all surreal and gross and horrifying and so forth, but designed without any thought of making them interesting or original opponents in a tactical sense.

The Longest Night
This tops the list of my all-time regrets. Hate to say it, but my faith in ENWorld's reviews dropped sharply after I read through this highly-touted book. Like Creature Collection, it's full of creepy ambience, but little meat and very, very little respect for players. Heck, make that none. SPOILER ALERT! Mainly, the players fight zombie after zombie (but called "thralls" in order to cleverly disguise what they are as something completely original), and are shuffled like cattle from one encounter to the next. If the players are supposed to get trapped according to the script, then they're trapped. No way around it no matter what they do. If they figure who the not-so-cleverly-concealed mystery villain is (which they can do if they so much as catch a glance of the book's cover), jump'er on sight, tie'er up and stuff a sock in her mouth and sit on'er, the script says the villain still gets away the second the players heads are turned (if their heads don't turn of their own volition, you have to tell them their heads turned at some point because they just had to). If they sneak up the bad guy and try to drop barrels of naptha on her, the script says she immediately casts a featherfall on them, without regard to surprise rounds or initiative. And worst of all, the script depicts the climax of this adventure as a combat between two NPC's whose power levels vastly overshadow the players. They're expected to just sit back and listen to boxed text until their cue for the coda. Lame and unacceptable.
