What did TSR do wrong?

I know we (Poland) were no target of TSR, especially before communism collapse, but the main problem with TSR here was there was no official Polish representative.

I know it sounds shallow, but what really put me off of 2nd edition was the original, horrendous cover art (PHB etc) and the horrible blue, generic brand looking inside graphic design.

It was everything that was wrong with 1st edition, but without the cool vibe.

For me, the best part of the 2nd edition days was the campaign settings, to this day I think Al-Qadim is the coolest, most elegant campaign setting to date.

Absolutely sure, at least the 1st edition one was an interesting picture (thief stealing a gem from a big statue etc).

Normally Easley is okay, but this shoddily rendered (terrible lines/bad colouring), generic warrior chump, charging through a gully just didn't cut it for me.

2E had some great art, IMHO...Jeff Easley is one of my favourite fantasy artists...

That was the first cover of the PHB. There was a latter cover as well, I believe, and it was less impressive. But if that is the one you mean, I really liked it!
