What do you buy if you can't buy magic?

DWARF

First Post
Alright, my DM has created a world where magic pretty much cannot be bought. He hands out magic potions and items in treasure hoards, but buying magical items is pretty much completely out the window.

So, now approaching 10th level and coming up on 40,000 Gp, what is the party to do with all the wealth? The game is fairly railroaded and we don't have much downtime. We currently have a small ship to go around in, and no real base of operations. Problem is, the country we're travelling through is right in the middle of an orc invasion so picking a spot to settle down and rest doesn't seem like the best idea either.

Any suggestions?

Donate it to a church, use it to hire mercs to fend off the invaders, upgrade your ship, buy seige weapons, bribe the orc army....

Ask your DM if he likes the "GP for Magic Powers" idea.

Basically, you look at a magic item in the DMG, and 'pay' double the price in order to get it as a natural magical ability for the character. Where these come from can be up to the DM -- the god's blessing, mutations, the stirrings of your paragon selves, whatever. He can make up how you get it (even choose what you get, if that's his style), but it sucks you your gold, and it gives you some commesurate powers.

On the other hand, if it's just a lot of gold you have a problem with, and the land you're in is in the middle of an orcish invasion, I'd say it's time to either (a) run away to a distant nation, or (b) start paying people to build you a fortress and live there, setting yourself up as a local lord. Donations to the temples are always appreciated, too, and you could consider paying a wizard to do something grand for you.

40,000 GP, you say?

2,000,000 chickens, say I.

2 cp each - they're a bargain. Plan to dominate the known world with Chicken swarms.

Another possibility is 4,000,000 Lbs of Wheat - destroy your enemies economies with cheap bread.

And finally: 2,000,000 foot of hemp rope and make the worlds longest death slide or biggest string ball.

Invest the money!

Buy shares of a trading company.

Or buy cheap, maybe monster infested property. Clean it up and sell it for a lot more.

Make a lot of money!

If you have a lot of money buy a base of operations. Not a cheap one Tower and Bridge thing, but a good sized castle with a lot of build in arcane defenses.
Or carve yourself a kingdom (or democracy or whatever). This is bound to cost lots of money. For an army, homes for peasants and so on.

Or just spend your money (the 40.000) on a good, month long party!

Find yourself a remote cave. Use some of the money to enlist the services of a kobold tribe. Lay the remainder in a thick layer on the floor and lie down on it. Tell the DM you aren't moving until you transform into a Dragon.

You might as well do that. There doesn't seem to be much else your DM is going to let you do with it! :D
