What do you eat/drink?

So I'm thinking I should really make an effort to have the "local flavor" be represented in the different places the PC's visit. And underscore that it's only the very rich who can afford to have exotic foods from faraway places shipped in.

You need to have one island where everything the PC's order is some version or other of spiced ham.

Well in my current campaign since it is set in what is essentially a fantastical version of 18th century Louisiana. I am using lots of historical dishes when describing the food with the names altered.

In other campaigns:

-Planescape: Anything and everything. I make a point of describing every bizarre thing that could be considered food and things that are food just not for humans, ie; "get your souls here, nice and sinful souls for sale, seasoned to perfection in debauchery, cheating and murder."

-On the Run/Criminal: This is a pretty common thread for my campaigns to have the PCs on the run or considered criminals by the governments of the world. As such they usually have just basic rations (in my more high-tech ones, they are literally MREs) or food they can scavenge or steal.

Eating and drinking please. BoEF can have its own thread elsewhere with its related topics.

How about holidays in games? I don't know if anyone really has festivals in games with PCs around anymore, but what are served there? Seasonal drinks maybe for blessed holidays? Traditional meals/feasts?

Thanks.

That's never come up. That particular sect is concentrated in a certain geographical region, which the PCs only visited for a couple of game sessions.

That would make for some good adventure material: "You notice that Sir Garnfor is staying away from the potatoes...."

I just have to point out that one of the biggest differences between "medieval" cuisine and modern cuisine is the ubiquitous use of some New World foods. In particular, the potato comes originally from South America, and it revolutionized cuisine worldwide to the point that it is bog-standard and basic. My European wife couldn't believe me when I told her that potatoes were originally from the Americas.

It's fantasy, so who cares, but you could change things a whole lot just by excluding New World foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, maize, turkey, tomatoes, and jalapenos.

My aborted 4e game had the party escorting a trade caravan across the Arkosian desert to a jungle realm far to the south. The goal? To bring back Cacao--the trader had discovered an exciting drink known as Chocolatl, and though it would be a big hit.

Also featured some other Mexican foods--there was a El Camino Real/Mission theme, and I was trying to get as much of the flavor as possible (pun intended).
