What do you get out of signatures?

I like straightforward sigs that don't make me think too much.

I haven't seen a sig here at EN World yet that has bothered me because of what it said, or how long it was etc. I actually like seeing them - had some good lol moments, and been linked to many interesting things via them. If there were none, I would feel I was missing put on a big part of the "community" aspect of these (any) forums.

As for myself, I just link to various (D&D related) projects of mine here at ENW. On a Web Developer forum I will link to my portfolio, etc. In general, I just make sure they are related to the subject matter.

So are sigs are like bumper stickers now, eh?

So I ask the community; what pleasure does anyone derive from having all their intelligent statements end with ridiculous comments (usually taken out of context so that most likely any reader won't even understand)?

I use mine as a "signature". The signature becomes a sign, the sign becomes a warning.

It is by humor alone I set the internets to motion.

I've been on ENWorld for a lot of years now (since 2001) and for the last 5 of those years have had sigs turned off. It really became necessary when a large number of posters began adding lots of stuff to their sigs - multi coloured, flashing text is not something I ever need to see. I really don't feel I'm missing anything.

This.

I have had signatures turned off ever since i set up my account here years ago.

I initially did it for speed (I was on dialup back in the day) but I continue to keep it off because I don't feel I am missing anything and in fact the occasional time I have browsed the forums without being logged in (thus my preferences to turn off sigs wasn't in effect) I was distracted to the point of being annoyed by a small handful of sigs, so I am pretty sure I wouldn't want to turn it on -- i'm just not used to seeing them and therefore don't want to and don't have a need to.
