What do you get out of signatures?

It appeases my ego and lets others know of who I am.

I kind of like this approach. An ego statement is good, or something else like the "Law's Quiz" that tells me who is speaking. What you chose to put in your sig tells me something about you, and serves as a tag for keeping people here apart - I suck at names, bu the "guy with the morbid sig" is easier to remember.

For this reason, I dislike when people change sig/pic too frequently.

Wow, this thread grew fast.

To be honest I didn't know you could turn sigs off (this is the only forum community I have ever visited so im not up on all the details), i will turn them off immediately. and I only picked an image by my handle cuz i thought it was required.

My handle being a inside joke is fine, because there are so many users you can't get a regular handle anyway, it has to be something nonsensical and weird, however your sigs don't follow those same rules, you can have any sig you want.

as far as bumper stickers, I think Dimitri Martin said it best, "bumper stickers are like little signs that say, 'hey, let's never hang out'".

and for the dude who's wife is from Tennessee, i never mentioned red necks or any regions of the country, if warren Buffet had a git-r-done t-shirt I'd still think he was culturally handicapped.

and I must say I agree, if your sig is huge or colored or flashing that is the epitome of annoying... ahemm

As soon as we can block images in signatures, or block signatures from appearing more than once on a page like we used to be able to do, then I'll turn signatures back on. Until then I've had signatures off.

I'm alright with signatures, but in moderation. I am very annoyed by signatures with images when someone using one then posts very often in thread where their image in the sig reappears like a bad billboard over and over. I can deal with annoying [fill in the blank] in moderation, but when I get to see it in excess, then I'm peeved. So, signatures are blocked until we get multiple sig-per-page limiting back.

FWIW, I agree with your take on bumper stickers on cars.

The only sig that vexes me is someone pimping their take on a 4e Psion. It complicates searching my threads via Google when ENWorld search is acting up.

I do dig other people that put their Laws' quiz results in their sig. :)

I (mostly) like sigs, because lots of posters, myself included, use them to re-direct to their own homebrewed rules and settings — things that I may have an interest in (and would never know about if it weren't for sigs). I like these sigs quite a bit. They have, in fact, kept me from turning off sigs when otherwise tempted to do so (see below).

The only sigs I really don't care for are those that narrowly skirt the forum rules by deliberately quoting other combative, insulting, or offensive posts (often posts that were moderated in the thread/s where they originally occurred). There's not a lot of that going on, but there's enough of it happening that I've considered turning off sigs in the past.

I like both funny signatures and bumper stickers. Guess I'll never fit in with the intellectual elites of society. Strangely, not that upset up by that :p

Edit: Man there have been some great posts/sigs on this thread... made me hit my xp-giving cap too fast.

I know, this thread makes me want to update mine, too. At least provide a description for that lonely little link. Maybe a joke. A funny animated gif. Perhaps a joke contained within the gif, and I'll make the text of the link twice as big?
