What do you like in animation?

And why do you like it? Do you like action, comedy, comic action, active comedy, drama, dramedy, draction, draction dramedy? Do you like Cowboy Bebop? Rainbow Brite? Heavy Metal? The Jackie Chan Adventures? Animaniacs? Batman the Animated Series? Homestarrunner?

Do you watch Cartoon Network, and if you do, what do you like on it? Do you enjoy the total whackiness of things like Sealab and Aqua Teen? Do you prefer the anime? Do you wish they had more action-based cartoons and fewer whacky ones? Or do you think The Venture Bros. takes itself entirely too seriously and needs to be replaced with more episodes of The Brak Show?

Well, as I don't have cable anymore (interfered with my gaming and reading :D ), all I can speak of is what I've seen in the past.

I go for more of the 'Action' type anime, with a grim and gritty feel (ala Akira, Fist of the North Star, the Venus Wars, and Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross). I'm less a fan of DBZ, because of the tendency to exaggerate the character's facial expressions when they are surprised. Likewise, I'm not to keen on inserting comic relief into an otherwise serious action anime (again, DBZ; if your going to do comic relief, don't go overboard). I really liked Titan A.E.'s animation style, and, even though not technically animation, I loved Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within.
I remember Outlaw Star on the Cartoon Network before I ditched my cable, and I enjoyed that one too (shows like that make me reconsider my decision to get rid of my cable).

I liked Animaniacs (over-the-top type comedy, with appropriate actions), and Batman the Animated Series. Heavy Metal is a must for any fan of animation, though you might want to rent HM: F.A.K.K 2 before you buy it. Animation was cool, but the story was a little lame (I didn't mind Julie Strain being used as the model for the main character, though :] )

Yes. I love the opening credits music.

Rainbow Brite?
Um, no.

Heavy Metal?
Certain segments.

The Jackie Chan Adventures?
From what I've seen, sure.

Animaniacs?
Sure.

Batman the Animated Series?
Yes. Excellent show.

Homestarrunner?
Never got into it.

Absolutely. I enjoy Justice League and don't enjoy Teen Titans. In fact, Teen Titans was a major let-down. Dexter's Lab is extremely uneven, but I've loved certain episodes (Mock 5, the episode with Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt, anything with Monkey). And, I must admit, I'm a Powerpuff fan. (Mojo rocks.)

No. I can't watch Aqua Teen. I've enjoyed Harvey Birdman though, but the show is quite uneven.

Not really.

Definitely not. First, Venture Bros. is perhaps the best show on television right now, and, second, if there's one thing it doesn't do, it's take itself too seriously.

"Who wants PIZZA ROLLS?"

I like superheroes, fantasy, action shows, chinese/japanese fantasy, romantic comedy, comedy and wackiness in about that order.

Batman/Superman: TAS/Justice League/X-men: Evolution/Teen Titans and such are my favorites. I love the anime homage/comedy in TT as much as the supehero parts; I still wish we could have a 'serious' TT show (of almost any TT era) and thought I would loathe TT but I found I loved it for itself. I've never seen the latest traditional animated Spider-man which ran for some time, but I did like the MTV Spider-man a great deal. The 60's show? God, that was terrible. Static Shock is pretty good but could use a little touch-up in the smoothness of the animation.

For anime I like Outlaw Star, L/R, Wolf's Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, Lodoss, Heroic Prince Arislan, Cowboy Bebop, 12 Kingdoms, and anime like those. There are lots of others I'm not metioning, I'm sure. Also: Sorcerer Hunters, Orphen, Last Exile, Someday's Dreamers, Scryed, Descendants of Darkness to name a few. Romantic Comedy like Gravitation, Ranma, Oh My Goddess, Tenchi; I want to try Maison Ikkoku and His and Her Circumstances; I've heard they are good. Anything by Miyazaki, of course. Only I don't watch them on Cartoon Network; I get them from Netflix. I'm afraid I'm somewhat of a Nazi and greatly prefer my anime dubbed. I've seen a few that are good subbed but so few I seldom bother.

I liked Titan: AE, Treasure Planet, Sinbad, Atlantis. Treasure Planet may be my favorite Disney pic, period.

Most of the Cartoon Network wackiness I could do without. I've tried watching it and I can't. Megas is about the only thing I've seen that I can stomach for a short period of time but I can't say I've ever been interested enough to watch an entire episode.

Drawn Together and Venture Brothers, though, I love. Never can tell.

Animaniacs and Freakazoid are about the only purer comedies I can think of that I liked after classic Warner Brothers shorts. And of course The Tick.

Edit: I forgot Family Guy, & Futurama in comedy. And South Park, of course.

My tastes in animation aren't that different from my tastes in live action, honestly. In general, I seem drawn towards light-hearted, action-packed romps that mix genres smoothly without giving up some sort of overall plot. Overly serious/unserious shows don't do much for me.

Looking at Cartoon Network's lineup,(including some canceled shows) I like:

Jackie Chan, Teen Titans, Inuyasha, Yu-Yu-Hakasho, Kenshin, Full-Metal Alchemist, Venture Brothers, Cowboy Bebop, Power Puff Girls(sometimes), Dexters Lab(when it's good, it's good) Family Guy, Samurai Jack, Tenchi Muyo, And Futurama.

I'm not so fond of:

Dragonball, Gundam, Transformers, Wolfs Reign, Big O(like the robot chick, but that's about it) Justice League, Witch Hunter Robin, Tom the Mayor, Milk Chan, Aqua Teens, Sea Lab, Ed Ed and Eddy, Puffy Ami Yumi, Megas XLR, and most other CN originals.

From the Nickolodean line up, I'll watch SpongeBob Square Pants, Fairly Oddparents, and My Life as a Teenage Robot. The last Avatar is off to a great start.

The only Disney toon I watch is Dave the Barbarian. I loved Gargoyles, back in the day, but I totally can't get into the re-runs. (Could say the same about Tiny Toons)

Animaniacs was a great show. Batman, X-men, and Spiderman were great shows in the 90's.

So that's my list, for what it's worth.

What I like in animation:

Batman
Superman
Justice League
Samurai Jack
Gargoyles
Powerpuff Girls
Dexter's Laboratory
Venture Brothers

Back in the day, the original Robotech was the greatest show ever made. (Now I can barely watch it.) I still love the first five or six seasons of The Simpsons, and I enjoy Southpark when I see it, but I don't seek it out.

When it comes to animated movies, I've loved everything from Pixar, most Disney movies, and most Miyazaki (if only for the visuals).

From growing up in the dark ages of American animation and getting glimpses of Star Blazers and then Robotech, I assumed I'd love most Japanese animation. Really, most of it isn't that good. Grave of the Fireflies strongly affected me, and Akira had a certain mystique, but most popular anime seem like low-brow fun, e.g., "You are already dead!"

Mm. I like the DC "family" of super-hero cartoons (Batman: TAS/Gotham Knights, Superman, Justice League/JLU, Batman: Beyond, and Static Shock, but not Teen Titans or The Batman). The Spider-man cartoon was fun to watch, but I couldn't get into any of the other Marvel toons.

For the most part, I don't like anime. The kiddie stuff is just inane -- I especially loathe all the dumb "face faults"/sight gags (ie, giant sweatdrops, big red angry cross-popping veins... I just don't get it). The more adult stuff, on the other hand, seems mired in existentialism. The big exceptions to my dislike of anime are Record of Lodoss War (the OVA; I haven't seen the series), which I consider to be the true D&D movie, and Fullmetal Alchemist, which has completely won me over with a great blend of drama and comedy, a cool backstory, superbly clean animation, great characters, and a really, really catchy theme song.

Can't stand any of the "Cartoon Network zaniness," sorry. Couldn't wrap my head around Space Ghost or Brak back in the day, don't even want to bother with Sealab or that show with the fast food. South Park doesn't turn me on, either. I can stand an episode of The Simpsons now and again, but too much turns me off. Futurama is really fun, though.

And Homestar Runner? Holy crap, I fweakin' live for Homestar Runner. Sewiously.

TROGDOR!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, non-American here, with limited, at best, access to CN.

Hate and despise ATHF and Powerpuff Girls. Seriously, words cannot even begin to express how much I hate PPG. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast is alright in small doses. Harvey Birdman is a laugh and a half though, and I enjoy Dexter's Laboratory. Teen Titans was a marked let-down, especially after Justice League. Batman: TAS was simply amazing stuff, as was Gotham Knights. Haven't seen any Static Shock or The Batman, so I can't comment on them.

I grew up adoring The Transformers, Robotech, Thundercats (great to have them back!), and Silverhawks. Some real nostalgia on CN for me as a result.

The Simpsons is pure, unadulterated genius. Always has been. Futurama was great, as is South Park and Family Guy.

Anime...love it. Absolutely love it, prefer the more serious stuff usually, although I do have a real soft spot for "Azumanga Daioh!" and "Trigun". Anything by yoshitoshi ABe is great, "Haibane Renmei" stands as an all time favourite, alongside "Texhnolyze", "Neon Genesis: Evangelion" and "Hellsing". "Cowboy Bebop" is the height of cool, listening to the soundtrack right now. "Wolf's Rain" is good, but I'd give my right arm for some bleedin' exposition! "S-Cry-Ed" was fun, as is the series for "Ruroni Kenshin" (prefer the OVAs though). "His and Her Circumstances" is one of the few romantic series I enjoyed, maybe it was having Anno at the helm that did it, I couldn't get into "Ranma 1/2", no matter how hard I tried. Same went for "Inu-Yasha", "Kimagure Orange Road", "Maison Ikkoku" and "Ah! Megami-sama". And I'm counting down 'till I can get my hands on "Full Metal Alchemist".

For the record on anime, I'll always give a dub a chance, but on average they last 10 minutes. Worthy dubs were "Hellsing", "Haibane Renmei", "Texhnolyze", and "His and Her Circumstances". "H&HC" is a special case, as watching it in sub requires speed reading. The two greatest dubs, that at least matched or sometimes even bettered the originals were "Evangelion" and "Cowboy Bebop", although all of ADV's dubbing work since seems to have sucked.

Oh, and I must get my hands on Gargoyles on DVD.

As I stated before, I don't like anime. I am giving it a chance, however, since my brother informed me about a movie that's coming out. For me, it's the culture factor. Which is why I like american-created shows, esp. the ones that showed up in the 90s such as Batman: TAS and Superman, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain (LOOOOVE that show), as well as some of the newer stuff that has the CN staple, such as Fairly Odd-parents (that show is so clever for kids and non-kids alike). I have yet to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars (although I am trying to find them, since we only get CN on satellite up here).

I like anime, usually in the style of things like Cowboy Bebop, Macross, etc - it's my favorite type of animation.

Less so, but still up on the list: a lot of the Warner television cartoons, such as Merry Melodies, Freakazoid, Animaniacs (and related spinoffs), etc. I started off somewhat cold on Samurai Jack, but I quickly warmed up to it (and thus I like Clone Wars as well). And I've never gone wrong with Simpsons or Futurama (and, less so, Family Guy).

However, I severely dislike the entire superhero genre (gunk like Batman, Justice League, etc).
