What do you most enjoy in fantasy lit?

I like a diverse well thought out world. That's why I like Robert Jordan. I agree with most critics that he churns out his story way to slow. But I'dd hate to miss all the detailed goodness that he turns out about his setting.

I picked other. I like motifs that resonate with the literary tradition and themes that reflect upon the human condition.

What else is there other than storytelling? If I wanted to read something for combats and action I'd read a comic book. Characters are a close second, but if the story drags then nothing can save it.

I most enjoy a sense of adventure and wayfaring... having a quest or motivation, traveling across distance to complete it, and coming across many different obstacles and challenges along the way.

This is what's most important to me in fantasy literature.... That said, my favorite series is Song of Ice & Fire. There's no one adventure, but an adventure for each of the several characters.

Why can we only pick one option? I think character and setting are equally important. Characters, because any story that isn't about people is no good at all, and setting because without it, you're not really telling a fantasy story, are you?

My thanks for the in-depth responses, and as to why I only allowed one choice, well, I did ask for your most enjoyed aspect, though it seems that for any work to achieve true excellence, superiority is needed in most of those categories.

How Martin does this so well is beyond me at the moment, though only through experience will I learn....
