D&D 5E What Do You Need to Roll Up a New Character?

What Do You Need to Roll Up a New Character?

Had there been a shorter time frame than "An hour or so" I'd have voted for that; I can bang out a character to playable status in our system in about 10-20 minutes plus whatever time the DM needs to fill in his bits, filling in some extra non-essential stuff later once it's in play.

The only big delays on my side are coming up with a name for it, and - if it's starting at raw 1st level - equipping it.

That said, I have the advantage of knowing our system inside-out. For a new player it can easily take 45 minutes.

PHB, at least one six-sided die, a pen or pencil, some paper, and some free time.

There seems to be a lot of open things online so that one does not even need the PHB. The SRD would be fine and DDB gives a lot for free to look up info on classes and such.
