What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I was going to run the Draw Steel quickstart tonight for my IRL group but after looking at it it is A LOT and I think I need more time to digest it. So instead we are going to continue our DH one shot and maybe it will become an actual campaign!

The DS Delian Tomb is more of a Lost Mines level of "entire low level adventure." I was pretty impressed with what it gives you after reading through it, but it's not a quick thing (and boy does it reinforce that this is "and then you have a combat....and then you have a combat...and..").

Mostly it was me not having time to get a decent handle on the game before I ran it. So I will study (aka watch videos) until I feel less incompetent.

Tonight's session went great despite being run completely off the cuff with next to no prep time.

This was the second session for this group, but we only had 3 of the original 5 players. It just so happened (purely by chance) that their characters were bounty hunters looking for a mark (which is what brought them to the town in the first game so "writing them out" was easy (the mark had moved on so they followed).

Long story short, the remainder players were sitting around the Sacred Pyre when a giant eagle crashed itself into the pyre, blasting away the sacred branch at the core. One player read the thongs dead mind and discovered it had been infected by The Darkness to disrupt the flame.

The PCs were told about a replacement that had been hidden away and went off to retrieve it. I set an open clock for how long they had before the last embers of the old sacred branch burnt out, so they decided to set off in the dark to save time.

This saved time but increased danger so they got Wayland by Darkness infected trees a la Wizard of Oz (I used giant brawler stats because I had them on hand). Tough fight but they won. They decided not to rest to keep the clock from advancing.

Once at the "Vault" (a cave with a Boulder in front of it) they used tools, smarts and sweat to open it, where they discovered the "spare" sacred branch. With a devil sitting on it.

I honestly don't know what made me decide to do that, but it worked out great.

The devil wanted a soul for the log. You see, when people are killed by The Darkness, their souls are consumed, which has caused a bit of a currency problem in Hell. But if the devil can secure a bargain, they can yoink the soul before it gets obliterated.

In the end, the noble hero that sold his soul did so for the branch, a second spare branch and the location of his ancestral weapon.

The devil disappeared to "consider it" and upon returning agreed and put the hero into a seizure. During it he saw his great grandfather nearly succumb to the darkness but call out for ANYONE to help him. You can guess who did.

Now the hero has an axe possessed by his grandfather, who knows the location of a sacred branch as well as the location of where he died with his sacred weapon.

Looks like the one shot has become a campaign.

This is an excerpt of how Daggerheart describes itself:
Daggerheart is a heroic, narrative-focused experience that features combat as a prominent aspect of play. The system facilitates emotionally engaging, player-driven stories punctuated by exciting battles and harrowing challenges.
Emphasis mine in bold.

I say this because I think that some people want to play Daggerheart as a "cozy game." However, I don't think that is what Daggerheart is designed for as is.

However... However, I do think that it could be. In fact, I think that its Fear/Hope mechanics and other systems could make for a fantastic cozy game. But at that point it would become another game entirely. I think that there is a future game out there that hasn't yet been made that would be great: Cozyheart! Take out the classes and domains. Create new ones that are less combat-centric. The game becomes a cozy game about helping out your community with their problems and adversity. The duality mechanic becomes a lot softer way to introduce complications, as well as representing some of the hope and anxiety of the game.

That is a great idea. It absolutely isn't a game for me, but it is still a great idea. Some people like Doom. Other people like Stardew Valley. Both of those video games exist. There should be similar diversity in TTRPGs.

Here is the text for the first newpaper article I am going to post for my Daggerheart supers convention games to gin up interest as well as introduce villains, pregens, setting elements, and lore:

Arcanopolis Eye
3rd Highward, 2390

Admiral’s Ball Robbed by Vampire Witch, Thwarted by Vigilante
By Emeliana Starcostro

The Admiral’s Ball is one of the pinnacle event of The Tiers during the High Season, always attended by a who’s who of Arcanopolis’ elite families. This year the spectacular event became the scene of terror when the disgraced countess and vampire Lady Bloodright interrupted the Ball.

Witness accounts tell of a violent shakedown as members of the staff turned on the guests suddenly, tearing jewels and finery from their unsuspecting innocent victims. Whether these ruffians were true devotees of witch or under her spell has not been established.

Meanwhile, Lady Bloodright took Lord Admiral Balthazar Corrum himself hostage and threatened to drain his life's blood then and there if the other guests did not comply. Though valiant, the Lord Admiral was no match for her mesmerizing powers, witnesses reported.

The scene was disrupted, according to witnesses, when the vigilante known as The Wraith suddenly appeared in a burst of shadowy mist, as is his wont. He felled many of Lady Bloodright’s trolls and engaged the witch in a magical duel, according to witnesses. Finally, Lady Bloodright was forced to abandon both the Lord Admiral and her ill-gotten booty lest The Wraith capture her. She changed her shape into a red, winged respect, said witnesses, and flew away.

The Wraith left the scene in the manner he had come, perhaps in pursuit of Lady Bloodright or merely to avoid interaction with the constabulary.

After the events, Lord Admiral Corrum made the following statement: “We will not be intimidated by these villains and vigilantes. The so-called Lady Bloodright will be brought to justice, along with that vigilante!”

The Arcanopolis Eye will continue to follow the story as more information is available.

We just wrapped up a 6.5 year 5e campaign last week. Next up: I'll be GMing the Daggerheart Quickstart Adventure to see how the group likes it. While I was reading the DH book, we were in the final weeks of our campaign, and I couldn't help thinking how much more epic/cinematic those final sessions could have been if we'd be using DH instead of 5e. Given our particular DM, and the campaign he created, it seemed like a perfect fit. So, we're going to give it a go and see what happens...

It's more of a thought experiment for me at this point. But I also imagine that one could easily take a game like this and then apply a variety of unique campaign frames that takes this premise to adjacent genres, such as a campaign frame that turned it into more of a survival game.

I finally got the first promotional "news sheet" done for my Carnage game.

Hey, if anyone here is using DaggerheartBrews, I'm having a huge problem. I can't export my card, and I can't create a new card--I can only overwrite my first card. Does anyone know how to fix that? I'm registered and logged in.
