I consider it tremendously important to play a range of games. I wouldn't be happy being forced to play nothing but Chess, for instance. So, despite my great love of Eurogames, I also play strongly-themed games such as Twilight Imperium, Twilight Struggle, and, yes, D&D. :)
Cheers!

I'm almost the opposite sadly. I pretty much stick with one game at a time and pour my resources - mainly time - into it. Right now that is D&D. I paint miniatures, create terrain, work on adventures, and prepare for each week's game. I do slip in an occasional boardgame, but my leisure time is pretty channelled.

It was the same way when I was into Confrontation a few months ago.

It's one of the reasons I avoid Computer RPGs - I know myself. :heh:

I was playing on Maelstrom RP-PvP server. I recall many OOC conversations about what kind of losers role-players were.
The PVP portion of that trumps the RP side.

And the General channel is the server's toilet, whatever type of server you're on.

I think we'll be seeing:

a) Indy RPGs that are ultimately setting-less.
b) Large-scale RPGs that have a lot of product tie-ins ("buy minis! Buy cards! Buy books! Buy specially-marked dice! All necessary to make a good PC!")
c) And, I think rules will grow. Rules-light systems, I think, will be the realm of the indy game.

That's good, because boardgames are currently healthier than they have ever been, IMO.

But it's not a roleplaying game then. If they go the way of being boardgames, then we can say goodbye to pretty much everything that makes an RPG an RPG. May as well slit D&D's wrists right now.

Other: Crossover between RPGs and CCGs.

The Star Wars Saga game hints at this the way that they have the force powers work.

(although, hint, probably isn't right, since they say "like cards". The only thing is that no one makes the cards. Yet.)

PvP shouldn't trump RP. Allowing for PvP should make the RP more meaningful. Also, it's pretty hard to RP with the other side of the Alliance/Horde division when the game won't even let you talk with them.

WoW is not a RPG. I will go with Gary's words that such games are about role-assumption as opposed to actual role-play.

OK. The PvP community still trumps the RP community on WoW servers. If you wanted to RP, you were on the wrong type of server.

There's plenty of DMs who draw a similar bright line, when the game they're running is about war, not making friends.

WoW is absolutely an RPG. It's just not the RPG you want it to be.

And I read too many Sorcerer's Scrolls columns back in the day to worry too much about how Gary thinks the rest of the world should be allowed to play.

It was a Role-Play PvP server yet you say I shouldn't go there to role-play. Yeah. Gotcha. Really, this just illustrates how MMORPGs hide behind a mask of RPGs while providing nothing but adventure games. It isn't like I can convince the ruler of Stormwind to take a course of action. All I can do is run through the logic path of the game to complete quests and grind honor/arena points.

I've never had the pleasure of playing in a game where I was forbidden to even try to communicate with an NPC...and I hope I never do.

Naw, it's absolutely not a RPG, even if you want it to be. :p

I never said I was worried about being in compliance with Gary. I just happen to agree with him on this one point.
