What do you think of the Greyhawk Adventures Novels?

I was wondering what people thought of some of the Greyhawk Adventures novels.

I read Against the Giants, and thought it was a good nostalgic read but not a particularly good novel. I also read Descent into the Depths....

Anybody have comments on other titles like the Temple of Elemental Evil, White plume mountain or Keep on the borderlands

I picked up White Plume Mountain based on some compliments by others. I found it to be pretty pedestrian -- I won't be reading any of the others.

I recommend the ones by Paul Kidd: White Plume Mountain, Descent into the Depths of the Earth, and Queen of the Demonweb Pits. They're well written, with likeable (and humorous) characters, and take you on a trip through memory lane if you've been through those modules yourselves way back when.

I've also read The Tomb of Horrors, and felt pretty much the same way as you did about Against the Giants (which I have not read) - good for nostalgia, but not particularly riveting. I'd avoid Keep on the Borderlands, though - that one didn't do much for me at all.

I really liked the Paul Kidd written ones. Damn funny if you ask me. Of course not being dead serious means they rub some Greyhawk fans the wrong way.

Paul Kidd's novels (White Plume Mountain, Descent into the Depths of the Earth, and Queen of the Demonweb Pits) are very entertaining although his funny style may be not appropriated to all tastes.

Tomb of Horrors and Temple of Elemental Evil may be not great landmarks of literature but aren't that bad. Nostalgia surely help them, but they are kind of entertaining by their own.

However, Against the Giants and The Keep on the Borderlands are a different beast. They are very bad and no nostalgic feeling is enough to save them. I only finish them because they are short and I took it as a chalenge.

I picked up Against the Giants but never finished it, because it was of the same quality as all of the other TSR/WotC novels.

I really liked Kidds first two novels - White Plume Mountain reminded me of adventuring there the first time, and Descent into the depths of the earth was good too. I regret buying his last one though - queen of the demonweb pits. I felt this was hack rubbish compared to his earlier work, with a pitiful story that had less consistency than a vacuum.

I'm astonished I could enjoy some of his work so much and dislike another piece to such a degree, but there it is.

I really recommend the first two though.

I looked into them as well and found them pretty lame. I didn't even think the humor was very funny.
There are well-written humorous fantasy (I happen to like the first of the Myth Adventures books) and then there's this... stuff.

Well as a long-time GH fan I like them. You just have to look at it like it's someones campaign. Might not be your cup o' tea but obviously they had fun:D Of course at the risk of highjacking the thread I also like the TH Lain iconic character novels though juvenile:p
