D&D 5E What do you think they call 5.5e Ultimately?

WotC will definitely call it "Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary Edition".

Everyone online will call it "5.5e" and argue if it's a bigger change than 1e to 2e was or if it's more like (ugh!) 4e Essentials.

(That "ugh!" belongs to the overall online community. I actually kind of liked Essentials, though it was the death knell of 4e in the end).

WotC will just call it Dungeons and Dragons. Oh, sure. It'll have "50th Anniversary" on the cover or something similar to mark it as super special for more book sales.

But they'll -just- call it D&D for marketing purposes with no change to nomenclature to avoid any form of community schism.

Just take a look at their product description of the 5e PHB. The -only- place it mentions 5e or 5th Edition is in an accolade note from another company giving the book an award.

5.74 edition!

But more seriously, it is hard to answer this question without knowing who is going to head this, what kind of changes will be made or what they mean by compatibility, etc.

They will market the set of books as the 50th Anniversary Edition - they'll have special covers and whatnot. And they'll stop selling the current books we call 5e.

Then, after the anniversary is past, it will just be Dungeons & Dragons.

Yes. You're totally right. Only the 50th Ann. slipcase will be the 50th Ann. The regular release (of the same books) will just be D&D. Online community will still call it 5.5 though. No one will be able to stop that. It's already happened.
