What do you use Chat GPT for?

Recently I use ChatGPT a lot. It saves me bworing and googling for random tables and resources. I don't copy-paste suggestions; I always have to edit them. But getting started is great. "Give me 10 random magic weapons", "Get me 3 random backstory ideas". In one game I participate as a player the GM wanted each plaeyr to create "7 knives" - background story points the GM can "stab" you with. I mean, that's a lot! I can think of one, maybe two for an imaginary character, but seven? But after chatting with ChatGPT for 10-15 mins I have all of them fleshed out with 3-4 sentences. It's great! Prepping my own campaign notes is also much easier. Again, I never copy verbatim. Once I get an idea, I summarize it, so exact decorations are lost ("This looks like a great idea! Here are 10 bullet points:")

I've used ChatGPT to help come up with ideas for DnD/RPGs such as subclasses, class abilities, campaign settings, spells, etc. I've also used it to help me write some DAX though I find it is only marginally good at that so I'll instead google my query and see if I can find someone online who knows what I want (maybe I need to work on better explanations of what I'm after).

Recently?

  • Replacing Google as a source for things that are common knowledge in fields I don't master, but for which getting slightly fuzzy information isn't a problem (if I ask for an outline of the Apollo XI mission, I don't need the exact budget rounded to the nearest dollar, and ChatGPT doesn't say that the whole project is a hoax either),
  • Replacing Google as a source for things I know, but can't remember exactly, pertaining to fields I am knowledgeable with, so I can spot things that are incorrect,
  • Finding suggestion of recipes for my Christmas menu,
  • A FF-like adventure or two (some of which I shared here as it was the result of a "what can we expect from AI" thread),
  • Given a series of facts, ask as baseline outline for presenting structured ideas in a way that I can grade students against (I expect them to beat a computer program, so getting the "average Joe level answer" helps me assess their effort),
  • Comparing documents,
  • Generating monsters and stats,
  • Brainstorming adventures as other have described, including the "give me 5 answers" so I can select and develop the ideas I like most,
  • Summarizing videos since people on the Internet apparently have recently lost the ability to convey their ideas with text and need to say it aloud while showing their face at the same time,
  • A translation assistant to choose words when writing in English while keeping the nuance of the sentence I want, like preserving a familiar or colloquial tone...

Yeah, I like ChatGPT as a (mostly) upgraded search engine because you can type in a general description of what you have in mind and it does an excellent job of interpreting requests. I have found, however, that it does tend to prioritize the same sources.

I also use it to get feedback on things like important emails, memos, and reference letters. I don't always agree with its critiques, but they are usually food for thought, and I find that I do agree with them more than I expected, given that I consider myself a good writer.

50% of all people have less than average IQ - this is a statistical fact
This means half of all people in the world, half of the people you know, half of all people you will ever meet, have low iq, if 'low iq' can be compared with 'average iq' and 'high iq'
This is NOT an insult. This is simply how life is. It is existentialism.

Fortunately, this is incorrect. Almost every IQ classification considers a score of approximately 90-110 to be "average", and most have a standard deviation of 15. Which means that, when using a normal Gaussian distribution (which is built into every IQ standard), only approximately the bottom 25th percentile of people will fall into the "low" or below average categories. And that number is likely to shift significantly lower on message boards like ENWorld, when you consider other correlations (wealth, etc).

Your assertion is not how life is, it is a George Carlin bit:

While I will agree that this is a hilarious routine, it distinctly lacks quantification or academic rigor.

This displays a misunderstanding of what the tools are good for. "Creative work" is the least valuable use case for ChatGPT and other similar models.
If you look at the examples in this thread it's not a misunderstanding in a rpg user context. And that's what we're talking about, right?

If you talk about AI in general you will only get far leftist capitalism critique from me, I'll save you that per the forum rules.

Without falling into politics, you might be interested in open source AI solutions, who are either state-of-the-art or very good depending on the field, with a key limitation of the available hardware to run then at home, without any involvement by a capitalist entity. One would still need a computer and potentially a higher-end one (or rent access to a server in extreme case like Llama-3.1 405B that requires nearly 1 TB of memory to run), so it's not really available to all humanity yet, but it beats paying for ChatGPT if you're not inclined to do it for ethical reasons. I suspect that chatGPT was chosen by the OP because of its wide availability rather by a distinct preference for a company product.

All I see from chat gpt etc is a way to not use ones own creativity. I want my brain - with all it’s limitations - to be able to get into creative overdrive when I need it. It’s something I enjoy and don’t want it to wither away or be replaced.
just felt like stating that then?

Have you noticed that many people in this thread use AI to put their mind into creative overdrive, like a kickstarter, instead of replacing the engine? Also, be reassured that nothing in this tool will prevent you from not being creative by yourself. I am aware of no plan to forbid people to be creative due to the advent of AI.
