What does "Gestalt" mean?

Forgive my ignorance, but I see a lot of people mentioning the word in relation to their game, and I have no idea what it means.

Could someone enlighten me please?

Aww! And here I thought someone would just post something like this- Gestalt. :D

Actually, based on that, I always thought "gestalt" was a very inappropriate name for this rules option. Because the end result is NOT greater than the sum of its parts. It is in fact, exactly equal to the sum of its parts- or rather the best of its parts. A more accurate word would have been quintessential-
"the most perfect embodiment of something."
