What ECL penalty should I give for a gestalt character?

I am going to have ECL 14 characters in a new game and to me a single 14 vs a 13/13 does not seem balanced.

In my mind it would have to be 12/12 or lower. I am trying to figure that out though...

+2 should be about right at that level, maybe even +3.

I would probably start with +3 and if it turns out to be not such a good deal, simply lower it to +2 (better than the other way around).

Alright 11/11.

I suppose I could do some equation and let the players spread them out. Something like 14 + (14/2) = 21 total levels. One class can be no higher than 12. So if they would wind up 12/9. So if they were a fighter wizard they would be a 3rd level wizard and a 9/9 wizard/fighter.

I think I would rather make it simple and just say +3 LA.

The big problem is that not all gestalt combinations are created equally - the variation between them is actually rather extreme.

How strong it is depends on how well the classes synergize.

For example, if someone wanted a Gestalt Archivist (INT based divine caster) / Wizard that'd be worth +3 to +4 LA due to the massive versatility and stackable class abilities. Ditto for Favored Soul / Sorcerer.

If, otoh, someone wanted to a Gestalt Barbarian / Ranger, I'd consider that to be worth only about +1 to +2 LA, because there's a lot of overlap between the two classes.

Similarly, given the stacking, Fighter / almost anything should be worth around +3.

On the other other hand, if a PC wanted to Gestalt with NPC classes, that'd be worth about an LA less. For example, something like Rogue/Warrior or Fighter/Adept would probably be only worth +1 LA at low levels to mabye +2 LA at high levels.

The exception among NPC classes being Expert, which is potentially worth +2 LA because it makes qualifing for PrC's so much easier.

I guess it's safe to assume, though, that people won't combine two very similar classes (i.e. Barbarian and Ranger). :)
