Started with B/X (Holmes Basic to be specific, but then Pink Box Basic - either way it was basic), then to 1e, then to BECM.
Came back to 3e.
Will buy 4e.

As I recently said, the best thing TSR ever did was to have a Basic set, with standard character generation, that interfaces directly with the Advanced rules (or tries to). The worst thing they've done is to fail to have the same ever since. I think this poll helps to bear out how important that was.

I played BECM for about a year ('82-'83) before switching to 1E AD&D ('83-'89).
I played 2E for about a year (1990) before dropping the hobby through to 2003, when I picked up at 3.5E.
