What Edition of D&D was your First (with fixed Poll)

Chainmail (1971)

When I got the white box set I went out and bought Chainmail and the "Survival" board game, then couldn't find anyone to play with!! I was in the Navy at the time but this was in '79 so it was not as widespread as it is now.

After I got out I bought Melee and Wizard and the T&T solo dungeons and then found a student published magazine OGRE in a philly scifi bookstore. There was an article by Robert West, of the 'Robert West Curse System' for the PrincCon rules. Not only did he describe the game but at the end of the article he put his phone number for anyone interested in trying D&D! That seems so naive now but it was exactly what I needed; I was the only one to call.

I went down to Temple University, hence the TempleTroll moniker, and got to roll up a character using the princeton variant rules. I had a dwarf with a 19 Strength and a 3 Charisma! Oh, I named him the only dwarf name I knew that wasn't Disney - Gimli.

He got up to fighter 6 and thief 6 before we stopped playing his campaign. Great fun.

[edit] If I play 4e it will be off someone else's books. I don't see the need to buy it; I have plenty to work with with what I have.

I came in near the end of 2nd edition AD&D in 1999. And I will definitely check out 4e, probably cannibalize a lot of stuff for my 3.5e game, and eventually shift if it seems worth it.

I answered Basic/Expert, but in reality it was a mix of Moldvay and AD&D 1E (expert rules in S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks).

Come to think of it, it was the Holmes set I started with. And of course I'll buy 4e, I have every version of D&D from the white box on (except for the brown box OD&D which I gave away).

The basic set with the pale bluish cover and the dragon on it for the first couple of games and characters, then 1st ed AD&D. I'll buy the 4e core rules.

That's the one I started playing with. The pale blue and white cover with the red dragon on top of a treasure horde. Is that Holmes? I then switched shortly after to 1e.

The funny thing was my actual intro was the little booklets, Greyhawk/Eldritch Wizardry,/etc., but I got called to dinner and never got to play.

I dove in with 1e...my first exposure to the game was having a PH put in my hands. My next exposure to the game, by someone else half a year later, actually involved some explanations as well; so I waded in.

The rest is history. History nobody cares about, perhaps, but still history.

As for 4e, I'll probably pick up the first round of core books just to see what they've done with the game and whether there's any good ideas I can poach...kinda like what I did with 2e, and 3e.

The Red Box set, late 80's. My Mum bought it for me when we were shopping in York (UK). Been through every edition since, and I don't see any reason to stop that trend with 4e.

It was the Red box for me, which my older brother got for Christmas in (I think) '83. I've played every version since then, so I fully expect I'll get the new one when it arrives to.

not planning on buying v4.

this may sound strange as hell, but we did not adopt v3 until it had been around for about a year. upon thourough examination, we found it to be broken enough to adopt.

yeah you read that right. you see, part of the fun of the game for us is coming up with all the hombrewed fixes that insure our game is radically different from yours. we enjoy problem solving. only if v4 proves itself to be broken enough will it be adopted. funny. by all descriptions of v4 given, it sounds like most of the game is getting around to running the way we do it (though we still have all the races and stuff). we just don't have a level cap.

so in summation, while not buying it, we will be watching it quite closely.
