With which edition did you pop your D&D cherry?

EDIT: 1E AD&D

Here's an interesting twist: If 4E was launched today, would you buy it? Wondering if that answer changes depending on which edition you started with.

The pole if flawed.

A lot (most?) of people played variants of B/E D&D, and some OD&D, and those ain't "1st ed" (A)D&D.

The first time I played was the Moldvay Basic Set circa late '81. . It was friend's opy. When my dad went to a game store to surpise me and buy the game for me, he came back with the Moldvay Basic Set and the 1E PHB for me, so I checked 1E. If Moldvay Basic had been an option, it would have been moe appropriate though.

Start over and ask the mods to lock the thread?

You could go with just

OD&D
B/ED&D
1st ed AD&D
2nd ed AD&D
3rd ed D&D

You could get into the various B/E sets, 3.5 and other iterations, but probably not what you are looking for. Oops, ok, you have 3.5. Well, I leave it to you.

PS: there probably is a pole like this already.

I started with 1st Edition AD&D, back in 1986.

And yes, I'll buy the core books for 4E, simply because I know that others will want to run games in the system. I reserve the right to make a decision in that matter for my own games once I've actually read the rules.

Started in 1980 with the Basic Set.

I can't answer about buying 4e if it were released today. Too many things are still unanswered about the new edition for me to determine whether I think it will be worth buying.
