Still, most people would agree more people play 4E.
Though I am not "most people", I can honestly say that of the far too many gamers I know, not a single one yet plays 4e. They/we either play 1.x or 3.x.

Which still doesn't help it emulate a cooking show. For this, you still don't have a game...

I haven't actually played D&D in about a year now; the last time was an attempt to try 4e (didn't work out for our group).

Realistically it has been about three years since we have seriously played D&D. We have played a lot of NWoD, Ars Magica, and 7th Sea. Currently we are looking at a FATE variant for a Lankhmar-like game.

Our group will probably be away from D&D for a few more years. It's not that we dislike the game, per se, but it doesn't map very well what we want to be able to do in our roleplaying settings, and my group follows my prime gaming maxim: Setting first, rules second. (In other words, find a set of rules that best expresses what you want to do with the setting, rather than forcing the setting to conform to the ruleset.)

I think the skill challenge system in 4E would work the best. That's one of the parts of 4E I've ported into my 3E games. With all of the advice out on the internet, and especially here on ENWorld (namely Rel, Piratecat, Stalker0 and the dude that just made the Conflex system - can't remember his name). I think that the Skill Challenge system from 4E is just an amazing tool for DM's.

I think GURPS would model this situation well. There are skills for all kinds of things and quick contests are easy to run. There is magic that could be helpful without being too powerful and the personality traits woven into the characters (bad temper, impulsiveness,) could have a nice dramatic effect on the challenge producing the kinds of "ZOMG they did that" reactions seen on TV.

I'd use a toolkit system- HERO, M&M...GURPS if you like it.

OTOH, for something COMPLETELY different, run it in Paranoia. It will be HI-larious.
