What ever happened to Role Playing?

Just curious, but what kind of response did you expect to get to this thread?

"Oh heavens! You're right! We have fallen into a world of numbers without souls! Please, take us by the hand and lead us into the promised land of TRUE ROLEPLAYING! Help us regain our souls from this mechanics-obsessed monstrosity of a board we've created!"

Sarcasm aside, what did you expect to result from this? Could you have made a response to your own thread, or were you just trolling?

I dont understand the Troll comment Billd91... I am asking a legitimate questions here and was looking for conversation.

But - you weren't asking a question. More like delivering a sermon. Conversation coming out of it is just trying to convince you that you're wrong.

That, and your snide blanket comments (maybe you think you're being kind by not naming people, but from out here it just looks like you're looking down your nose at everybody and this board is hardly worth your time) toward members of this board is what makes people think you're a troll.

Honestly, this looks to me like just the next iteration of 'superior gaming.' Player A plays dungeoncrawls, and likes it. Player B looks down his nose at Player A, and questions how he could POSSIBLY enjoy himself with such lowbrow entertainment? After all, everyone knows that TRUE WORTH comes from the ability to roleplay your character and create a unique personality and background. Player C looks down at both and says, tolerantly, you can enjoy yourself however you want - he says to himself, "I know the true value of RPGs - play in whatever style you choose; those who don't understand this are just lesser than me." Player D looks down at Player C and says "Ah, the new stage of gaming. The 'tolerant gamer.' Please, let's not sacrifice our principles. We've matured and can move on from dungeoncrawls." I've watched this sequence unfold at least once in every RPG board I frequent, but usually it doesn't get farther than this before the thread gets locked, and I'm glad to see it's not happening here.

Now I know some of you think youre good roleplayers but I am telling you from my experience I have seen just the opposite.

Please, oh lord, show us where we have gone wrong! Show us where we veered from the path of TRUE ROLEPLAYING!

Are you perhaps assuming this because of your earlier comments concerning the great array of threads about mechanics? That's what I call negative proof - the presence of one thing must indicate the absence of another, and vice versa. You are essentially saying that if we discuss mechanics, we must therefore shun roleplaying. Obviously untrue, as you can see from the nice responses people have written up to explain why there are a great deal of mechanics-related posts. The same 'negative proof' technique has been used to prove that D&D is a front for a vast Satanic conspiracy.

Absolutely ridiculous.

It's a game.

It seems all that is ever discussed on these boards is mechanics
Show me the "mechanical"threads on the board right now. The only ones on the entire first page that I see are
What do you think about Monte's new PHB Racial Levels?

What skill check would this be?

Mass Combat Rules?

Going by that ratio about 6% of the threads on this board are about mechanics. I don't find that excessive. I understand that you do, and fair enough. To each their own.

Well, hmph! I have a pretty good memory, but I don't recall when you and I played together....

Like others who have already responded, I would assert that as an element of RPGs, immersion in a character's persona is alive and well; and if you're not encountering players excited about developing character concepts, it's because of who you're playing with, not the state of the hobby/industry.

Further, just because you're not finding discussions about character development online, doesn't mean those discussions aren't happening, or that the creation of "soulful characters" is no longer in vogue.

Having said that, I do also think that the current plethora of published campaign settings and prestige classes do seem to want to pigeonhole characters more these days. Breaking out of the constraints created by that may, in general, make it harder for today's new player to learn to develop truly personal characters than it was for a new player 10 years ago.

As an ancillary, I wonder how much, if at all, the growth of LARPs has drawn the seriously character-driven roleplayers away from traditional tabletop RPGs.

With major settings like Kalamar out there I just don't see this.

Sure some settings are all about the toys: FR, Scarred Lands, Arcana Unearthed, Sovereign Stone and such.

But there are also detail and or roleplay rich options like Kalamar, Greyhawk (even if a lot of that detail is flawed), Bluffside, and even Wheel of Time (for those who step into d20).

There's choices now for DnD.

Probably quite a bit actually - but there are also some seriously fundamental problems with LARPS that can serve to send a lot of them right back, in my opinion.

Um, Arcana Unearthed isn't about toys at all. Do you own it? Have you actually read it?

It puts a ridiculous amount of options in the hands of the GM and players. Here's a preview.

Of course, I would say the same about Sov. Stone... To each their own, ne? :)

I'd have to argue against Scarred Lands and FR being just about the toys Certainly they, or any setting, could be played with just toys in mind, but both of these settings are packed full of background detail--history, characterizations, legends, etc. They may not be the most ideal settings for everyone, but they, like practically anything else, are what you make of them.

I was going to, and for a while did, let this slide. However, I think I'll add my voice to others to simply point out that you've probably never seen any of us actually play the game. So, in your experience you've seen... precisely nothing. Nothing upon which to base this conclusion, at any rate.

That's okay, though. Lots of people jump to conclusions, botch the landing, and fall down. Read on, and perhaps you'll pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start on better footing next time :)

Hmm. What do mean by "all about the toys"?

I don't really understand how LARP mechanics work.
