Forgotten Realms - It's huge, detailed, wonderfully dynamic, expansive, rich, vibrant, and a whole host of other words, too. The FRCS has set the bar. Mucho gusto.

Scarred Lands - I'm in a love-and-hate relationship with Scarred Lands right now. Some of the ideas I like (the frappe'd world for one), but the writing is so fuggin' bad. It's difficult to pour through their books because of the bland language. If they just wrote it better! G'uh.

I'm amazed at how few votes Dragonlance is getting. Is Dragonlance really not that popular now? Mind you, I've never played it.

Kalamar is getting a lot of votes, but it doesn't seem to get talked about on these boards as much as, eg. Scarred Lands. Could a Kalamar fan say a few words about what makes Kalamar a good setting?

There's a reason for that John...They all stuff ballots when someone does this kind of poll.

Btw Don, what exactly about the writing don't you like? Which books do you have?

I apologize terribly if this is considered a thread hijack. I don't mean to, just wanna talk. :)

Currently, I own: Relics & Rituals I and II, Scarred Lands: Ghelspad, and Creature Collection II.

I love Relics & Rituals I and II. No complaints, and if there are things I dislike, the quality of the ideas are enough to make me forget them. ;)

It happened with Ghelspad. I've tried, honestly sat down and tried to read this book over and over. It's difficult. I've tried to get through the section on Albadia, but the writing is bland. I like Scarred Lands, so it's with regret that I feel this way. Word choice, passive voice, subject-verb agreement, poor editing... it reads (as my wife pointed out) like a college student newspaper.

Maybe I'm being harsh, and I might be. Yet, why can't I get through the book? In places it's plain painful to read. As an example, I took my Sharpie and started editing some of the paragraphs. You should see the section on Fangsfall. :)

I'm currently running a homebrew, but my next campaign will be set in Kalamar.

But it seemed to me that what you were really asking is, which settings are the best. In which case I recommend both Scarred Lands and Kalamar. I'm not a fan of the Realms either, for all sorts of reasons. Scarred Lands has heaps of supplements available. It's a dark setting, that would do well in a high magic campaign, IMO. Kalamar is also well supported, the quality of their products is among the best you will find anywhere, and has an internal coherence you won't see with any other setting. It's a low magic world, but could be adapted to a higher level if you wanted.
