I'm with JRR Neiklot. It's not in the word itself, it's in the way many people use it when they're trying to subtly backhand OOP games. But as a reason to play, it's a perfectly valid reason.

But none of the games in the OP list are out of print. (Right?)
Old school does not imply nostalgia. It implies an older ruleset and a different style of play than todays game.
None of the games in the OP are older rulesets -- they're all new. (Right?)

So the OP is not talking about old, out of print games in this particular use of "old school". Right? He's referring to playing a new game that gives the feel of the old days/ways. He's talking about getting a nostalgic feel with new material.

In this context, old school is nostalgia. Right?

That's why I said that if I want old school style, I can play it with my current ruleset. If I want old school mechanics, I can play AD&D1 or BD&D.

And yes, part of the reason I play D&D at all is out of nostalgia. Part of the reason I like my form of "old school" play* is out of nostalgia.

*My "old school" may be very different from your "old school."

Yup, I agree with all that. I'm just pointing out that it's often used as a way to dismiss old style games, I'm not saying you're doing that (obviously you aren't). It depends on the context.
