What gets your attention?

So here is a question for everybody...

What gets your attention, what makes you look at a game book? And once it has your attention, what makes you decide to eventually pick it up?

Kick ass artwork and a spankingly imaginative title on the cover usually does it for me. Actually I always wonder why book binding edges arn't more decorative sometimes, afterall thats what most of us look at on the shelves.

Once it has me good fluffy bits always seem to keep me interested in a book. The new WOD books are great at this, its fluff after fluff in them.

A good piece of covert art, along with a good looking book (good binding, color, etc). After picking it up, its the content inside that counts. :)

I am a sucker for great artwork. Also, I love cool images. I also love maps. Maps of anything at all - dungeons, realms, modern, etc.

Obviously if the item is something I think I can use, it is cool, too. As a secondary, interesting NPCs is a great sell.

It has got to have great artwork (thats a must). If not then I don't even give it the day of day.

Once past that, it has to be useful in my games, and more than 7% pages worth. Its one reason why I only really buy monster books these days.

First glance: A topic that interests me. Great artwork doesn't influence me that much. Really terrible artwork will if it's a work that depends a lot on art, like a monster book or a superhero book.

What makes me buy: Good treatment of that topic. Something I can use, especially re-use. Very good maps. Well-done NPC's (background, but not too much; a good illustration of that person helps). All in all, I'll tend to buy rules over 'fluff'; I can create my own fluff but don't want to go to the trouble of creating rules. Rules that handle things in simple, elegant ways I had not thought of will get my attention over rules that are just lists. A new magic system will get my attention more than another spell list. A new twist on feats (like, for example, ceremonial feats or regional feats) will get my attention more than a simple list of feats.

Well, Tim, I check the subject. If it is praiseworthy, good, and very creative, then I pick it up. These days, I'm looking at things that have Atlantis, or Greece, on the cover a lot more.

Generally, I also check the reviews. Joe and Psion are great critics, and I trust their judgement on certain books. Since I have gotten out of the RPG Critic business.

For me I think I need to hear some buzz about the product, get some details. The thing that will attract my attention from that will be if people think the material is very original, not just a rehashing of old ideas in a new way. On the shelf, good artwork is nice, but my FLGS has so much packed in tight that you don't see the cover art until you take it off the shelf, so it is not a primary draw. Inside the work, good maps (useful is better than highly artistic to me) will get a favorable mark.
