What good is an Endurance skill?

It like, lets you endure stuff, man.

I'm thinking it will be used for a lot of the things that Constitution checks were used for, like others have said. But it feels strange having a "skill" called Endurance...in my mind, skills are things that your character learns, while fortitude represents their body's physical conditioning. I would rather have a fortitude save determine how long a character could hold his breath, or sleep in armor without getting exhausted.

Well... You can sorta train for Endurance.

Anything you condition your body to be used too, or become good at. Is essentially training your body to work that way.

Just like with Perception and Insight, those aren't skills you sit down with a book to learn. But you can train yourself to notice things in a room, or notice quirks in a person's behaviour, etc.

Possibly. Although, if you have hiked along with Thorgrim the Mighty-Thewed for the past 12 levels I would hope that you gained some conditioning.

2 cents.

I think a person can train to endure something... such as long hikes, running, or lifting heavy objects for an extended time. I honestly have mixed feelings about endurance, though. I can think of situations where it'd be useful (the aforementioned torture one was good), but... those are rare items that tend not to be too common place in games. I guess a good dm could always swing the story in ways where it'd be useful... but... I think I want to see it in action.

...I know, two weak pennies.

Somethings I thought of that could use Endurance:

-Holding shut a door/barricade
-Clinging to something
-Riding a horse (you need Endurance to ride for long)
-All the normal physical tasks that use endurance: hiking, holding your breath, lifting a heavy object, etc.
-Increasing your maximum equipment load
-Possible skill-based counters to attacks; weakening, stuns, dazed, etc.

Perhaps...

--force march
--hold your breath
--ignore hunger/thirst
--run for longer
--swim or tread water for longer
--sleep in armour

But if that's all there is, I'm thinking it'll be a pretty crappy skill. So, what other uses for this skill can you think of?
It would be a crappy skill in 3.5e, because such challenges were among the easiest (and cheapest) things to remedy through magic. I believe 4e gives us some kind of magical bread that addresses the hunger issue, so we may be in the same spot in 4e.

OTOH, maybe 4e will handle LotR-style treks across vast treks of wilderness into the arduous journeys they should be. We won't be jaunting across the landscape quite as easily.
