What happened to Banshees in 3rd ed. D&D???

Can anyone please tell me why there is no info whatsoever about banshees in the 3rd ed. Monster Manual, even if there still is the "Wail of the Banshee" spell?

Supposedly the designers needed a certain number of monsters for each challenge level, and apparently they met their quota and decided the banshee wasn't cool enough to make it in.

Course I agree with you. It is really weird to have the "wail of the banshee" spell in the PHB and no banshee in the MM.

You can always use the Creature Catalog banshee. I converted it quite a while ago. :D

Stat-wise, are there differences between the CC banshee and the ToH groaning spirit ?

For the most part no. I did a little fine-tuning on it (as well as all the other monsters that made the book). But- you should be able to use the CC banshee just fine.

One more question:

If the banshee is named "groaning spirit" in the ToH, that's probably not because of copyright issue as the word is public domain. Therefore, I see only two potential reasons:

  • There's going to be a banshee in the MM2
  • That's just because it was named thus in 1st edition.

What's the good answer ?

The second answer. It was the groaning spirit in the 1eMM, and thus it will be in the ToH. :)

Remember...just because something isn't in the ToH does not mean it is in the MMII.

Erica got it on both accounts.
