What Happened to '[Insert 1E/2E Spell Name Here]'?

My DM's favourite player quote

"Sticks to snakes? Why would anyone want to make something stick to a snake??"

Wow. You know i never even thought about it until now that so many classic spells are gone. Sticks to Snakes, Chant, Melf Minute Meteors (possibly my all time favourite) and Write. How could I have not noticed these until now? Wierd.

I put a Staff of Striking in my older 3E game (now defunct). It was pretty lame but it allowed the monk to do some damage now and again.

Necro's Eldritch Sorcery is a great tome...I've been using it a little with C&C. I was very happy to see Wyvern Watch and Chant in there as well.

After hearing the good things about Eldritch Sorcery and considering that it has some classic spells that didn't make it over, I decided to order it today. Normally I don't buy big books of spells, but this one looks good. :)

In fairness, that one died with 2E.

I can't believe I never noticed this before.

I've occasionally seen a striking-like power; but to a large extent, the Staff of Striking has been replaced by the +1 flaming quarterstaff. :)

Cheers!

i'm giving strong consideration to working on some spell conversions for Dragon mag articles... i miss feign death as well!

Write has returned as Amanuensis (Spell Compendium) Sor/Wiz0, but doesn't copy magical writing or maps.

Feign Death lived shortly (heh) in TOME AND BLOOD as a sor/wiz3 spell. Didn't make it into Complete Arcane or Spell Compendium though...

Other 2e hold-outs that T&B got that never again saw light in 3.5: Filter, Choke, Gaze Screen, Ice Burst, Hide Life, and Chain Contingency.

The closest to an offical Affect Normal Fires ability goes to the Fire Genasi (who had the spell as a SLA in 2e). A similar text write-up exists in his stat-block, one COULD just finalize the rest from there.
