What happened with true one-shots?

I'm surprised noone's mentioned the upcoming Dungeon Delve book. And then there's the strategy of signing up for the RPGA and getting short adventures from there. (Edit: Kheti sa-Menik beat me to the latter.)
But no, Dungeon Magazine isn't optimal for one-shots.

To me it seems like this was a plant question to get people to start talking about the RPGA. EVERY RPGA adventure is designed to be a one shot (with some over arcing story that players can piece together if they play alot of them). Plus they are free, just sign up for the RPGA (free), take the DM test (open book and easy), and you can get them.

Plus there are the D&D game day adventures and the Free RPG day adventures as well. So for 4e that means, "Into the Shadowhaunt", "Against the White Dragon" (which is not really an adventure, more like an encounter), and "Treasure of Talon Pass". "Treasure of Talon Pass" is free on the WotC site.

As mentioned, the Dungeon Delve book is pretty much geared to be one shots. Also, in the Dragonomicon and in the upcoming Open Grave books they have a "Liars" section that you can easily run as quick "one shot"s.

Also don't forget about Delve Night when on the topic of the RPGA. Four one hour encounters strung together in a plot light fashion. Every month a new set of four encounters comes out. The current one has some previews of the Open Grave creatures, and makes use of the current Dungeon Tiles set. They are rather enjoyable, and can be played as four one hour sessions over a month of time or all at once.

I know what you mean. They're not entirely gone. In fact, they go for $3.99 each.

I speak of Paizo's Pathfinder Society adventures on PDF. You don't have to be a member or buy into the Organized Play thing to use them. Each module is written to provide a little of everything in a usual adventure, and begin, adventure, and end within 4 hours of play. They're for 3.5 up until August, when they switch to Pathfinder RPG rules. There's 11 or 12 up now, and they are really good.

Is there any way to sign up without first attending an rpga event? I've tried before and as near as I can tell, I need an RPGA number first.

Since they merged databases between the RPGA (D&D) and DCI (Magic: the Gathering) I've been told it is easier to get a your number online through DCI than through the RPGA.

That said, I've had an RPGA number for over a decade, so I have no idea in specific how to go about getting a number.

Do you miss those truly short adventures
I don't miss them at all. I'm into campaign play. The only time I play one-shots is when trying out a new system.

Now, sometimes I have adventures in the camaign that are one-session long and sometimes they are more like side adventures. However, they are part of the campaign "continuity" and I don't think that is what you had in mind, by one-shot.

I have no idea with regard to gamers as a whole. However, based on the people I know, the answer would be yes.

But now, those are gone. The best you can get is an adventure which lasts something like 10-20 hours.

Do you miss those truly short adventures, or am I a minority?

If by gone you mean: "No NEW one-shot adventures written specifically for 4E", then I'd say "just be patient, they'll catch up".

If however you mean that all of the one-shots ever published (regardless of system) have DISAPPEARED, then I say we should form a small group of investigators with multiple talents (investigative, supernatural, etc.) and go seek out the TRUTH.;)
