What happens if we don't like it?

And the gaming group I was with has quit 4th ed. 6 members, 4 bought PHB, 2 bought several other books (MM/DMG/etc.) ... played for about ... 3 months when it came out. Tried to get a campaign going again and got no real interest. 8+ months of "meh, it's not D&D, it's a game called "4th Ed.""

I'm the one in Korjik's group that has bought almost everything (except the draconimicon, I refuse to buy it because of the "draconian" *wink* way they have split the dragons to sell more books. Oh and for the return of purple dragons...)

There are alot of things I like about 4e. I like stances and moving around in combat and using tactics. But I find alot of the rules break the story for me. I think that most critics of 4e have a simulationist attitude. The game feels like a tactical minatures game and not like a fantasy world with unique characters.

But I don't want to go back to 3rd edition, so I'm doing my best to work with the game and house-rule it to death until 4.5e or 5e comes out with all new problems that we can pick at.

iiinteresting thread necromancy. I have not seen many of those other posters in a very long time (look at their registration dates! Such long-time posters!)

[*] Now that a year has passed I do not hear any 4E player claiming that 4E is better in all aspects to the previous edition. They just like it better than 3E but miss things of 3E. (Surprisingly the Star Wars SAGA edition seems to be the only d20 system variant that people like universally compared to its predecessors)

Saga is probably better than the original Star Wars d20, but I think having spent some time with each, Revised is better than either. Saga has some really nice ideas, of course, but it also has some strange personality features.

But I DM it. One thing that they really nailed was how to make the game easier on the DM. As in less than 10% the effort for better adventures.
This is the most important point I think. After we finished an adventure or two at 20th level in 3.5, I told my group that I flat-out refused to DM 3.X anymore. I spent WAY too much time statting bad guys than doing anything else like, oh you know, working on the story. Although I like a lot, perhaps most, of the changes in 4th, the fact that it allows me to be a better DM makes for a much better game.

The DI is simply awesome, btw. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next little circle (tools). I hope it's a mapping tool.
