To be honest, I have always ruled it the opposite. If you die or gets knocked unconscious, the effect ends. The reason for this is that the Polymorph line and several of the monster's alternate form abilities changes you back to your normal form if you die. Also, I have always envisioned that continuous magic still draws its "inspiration" from you on an subconscious level so that even if you are not actively concentrating on it, there is still a link between your mind and it. If that link is severed, the effect stops. So, I don't think that a spell has a "battery" of spell energy to power it independently of you so that if you are no longer in the loop, it continues ticking.javcs said:Nope, otherwise, you know all those heirloom/plot device magic items you have? They wouldn't work anymore.
Once a spell is cast, it doesn't matter what happens to the caster unless the spell has a duration of concentrationm, or the spell grants the caster some form of control or influence over the target (no more control/influence can be exercised through that casting if the caster dies, unless he's brought back before the duration runs out).
I have also always taken that magic items are made permanent because of some investment of the maker (i.e., XP) that made them independent of the caster.
