Yep, I know we had this discussion fairly recently. However, I thought I'd take a quick poll to see what the numbers looked like!

So, a PC dies. What sort of new character does the player end up with?

Poll? Where?

*edit*

Well now its up. :)

I usually start replacement characters one level below their previous character.

Generally, it's new character at average level. I'm working on incorporating the ideas behind Ghostwalk (if not the actual setting) into the campaign.

If a character dies, and the player wants to create a new one rather than attempting to get their character raised, then the new character will start one level below their old character.

When a character dies, we all scream "No Marcie, no, you didn't have to do that"... Well, actually we don't.

I voted "minimum party level", but that's not a rule set in stone.

I'd vote for: at least 3 levels higher with 5 times normal gold, but there doesn't seem to be an option for that one... :D

If I'm a player that is. Otherwise it can vary, depending on the situation and level spread of the party.

I get them to create an new char with a 10% cut in their old character's XP, whatever level that would pout them on.

Cheerio,

Ben

I posted 'minimum party level ' - but that level is defined as "three levels below the highest-level PC'. And new PCs always have at least half the XP of their previous XP, so at low levels they won't be more than 1-2 levels below their previous PC.

We use the bottom of the level below their current ex-character. We also give only half expected treasure for equipping purposes.

This is to encourage the player and the other PCs to raise the old walking plot hook (sorry, character) from the dead, otherwise death can end up as a rewarding way to try out a brand new tricked-out PC.

Cheers
