What happens when a necklace of fireballs detonates when worn?

I guess i'm hung up on: all its remaining spheres detonate simultaneously, often with regrettable consequences for the wearer.

Seems to imply something slightly more dire. And given then nature of well, a bunch of fireballs going off around your head, would think it would be a bit more dire than just , make some saves.
A bunch of fireball beads going off around you, even if you get a save, often has regrettable consequences for you. There's no contradiction there.

Not getting a save would be a house rule.

Reminds me of that "broken" wand our DM had for us... which allowed anyone to cast fireball... but with no range ;)

He thought it was pretty funny till my char with high Refl save and evasion took hold of it.

Exactly.

Although as a DM, I might impose a circumstance penalty to the saves...but unless the character has some serious fire resistance, he's in enough trouble anyway. :p

Well this is going to be a "cursed" necklace of fireballs type 1, that cannot be removed except by the person that put it on you. And they can detonate all the globes on it if they want to (mental free action). Wanted to know what all is expected to happen when its actually detonated. Calling it "Necklace of Obediance". So even with a save it should be effective.

given nothing in the necklace's description to contradict the Fireball spell, saves, evasion etc will all work by RAW.

Having some house rule to not allow evasion, a higher save DC etc I can "see" having some justification for it, but that would need to be explained to the players.

And if you go this way for the necklace, how do you handle other things (sundered spell-storing weapon for example)?

A save indicates that you somehow dodged or managed to find cover and didn't take the full brunt of the attack.

You can't take cover from a grenade tied to your neck.

In this case, it is more like a bomb with a fuse going off instantaneously as all of the fuse is lit simultaneously across its entire length...because you fumbled your save vrs flamethrower....

No save. Evasion does not apply. Check for spell resistance if it is an option.

The guy standing next to you gets a save and can apply evasion, but not you, necklace boy!

If it helps, the "often with regrettable consequences" may not apply. You probably won't be around to be doing any regretting.

Which in this case could mean something as simple as realising the fireball just thrown your way will detonate the necklace and tearing it off and throwing it a short distance away, just like a grenade getting thrown at you.

Right here, you've already gone off the beaten path, so you're free to make up whatever rules you like. If you don't want to allow a save, don't allow a save. If you want a save and no evasion, do that.

RAW? Yes, they get to make a save. And they get evasion. The rules aren't always logical, and I probably would rule otherwise, but it depends on whether or not you want to have house rules in your game.

And you know what? If they make their save and have evasion, its still regrettable, because of two things:

1) Collateral Damage
2) The rather expensive and useful piece of jewelry they were just wearing is now gone.

Yes, which would be relevant, except:
