D&D (2024) What is 5th editions Spiked chain?

Heavy crossbow with crossbow expertise and sharpshooter.

Oh its this. Absolutely the closest analogy.

3.5 also had all sorts of level dipping and multiclass problems. the fact that 5e mostly involves just a few classes is probably an improvement.

But that combo, pure cheese whiz. I guess it shows the convenience of 5e that you can do it with only two feats!

Ooof, yeah, that combo is pretty bad. It's especially bad if you're hand-waving ammunition and encumbrance at your table.

Closest thing to a feat chain!

I think what it shows is that WotC imagines weapon die size being a much bigger deal than they are. d10+15 must be really big, while d6+15 must be really small, so you deserve an unconditional extra attack.

Don't you have to be an artificer to have a rapid firing heavy crossbow?

Feat chains in5E are 2 feats the 3 but the guts are usually 2.

Generally I don't bother putting in magical bows/crossbows or greatweapons.

You could say that dependence DM balancing makes 5e OS. And magic bows and swords are also pretty trad.

You could say.

Magic greatsword weren't that common in old D&D.

Longswords were.

I don't remove them from adventures just don't add them.

Sure. Though speaking of greatswords, cutting down enemies with a big sword is a thing in fantasy, and has some D&D antecedents.

The crossbow as Glock, that seems to just be an 5e artifact.

Yup. Thankfully I haven't had any characters abusing the OP feats for a few years.

Normally sword and board types.

Crossbow expert fix:
remove bonus action attack
add +1 dex

That's the sharshooter and gwm fix as well lol.

I think the martials need something like SS or GWM maybe make it an extra dice vs +10. -5 part reduced tob-2 or 3.

Hand crossbow would only deal extra d6 vs +10.
