What Is A Good D&D Mini Set To Start On?

Skip them all. Purchase Steve Jackson Games Cardboard Heroes set.

I use the crap out of mine and they're still beautiful. Another advantage is that you don't get them mixed up with the players' mini's (unless you have players who use pennies, gum and other "I AINT SERIOUS ABOUT GAMING" type stuff as a character marker).

If I were to buy a couple of bulk lots of minis (i.e. the lots of 10 from Auggie's), what minis would people recommend? Something to represent human baddies would be good. Another type of mini for undead and something to represent orc, goblins, kobolds, etc. would also be handy?

Any ideas?

Fixed it for ya. ;)

Already got it Psion. I have both Counter Collection Gold and Digital.

Minis just have that coolness factor that the counters don't.

Unfortunately they also have that pricey factor that the counters don't. :(

Noble Knight Games have lots of 50 Common minis going for $34.95 US and lots of 25 Uncommon minis going for $44.95 US.
Bad deal IMHO. Not enough minis for the money. ALso watch out, some ebay sellers gouge for shipping. Look for thosw who ship for flat amounts like auggies. Buying hordes of cheap commons can rack up shipping fast from sellers that try the +$1 per extra item bullcrap. Sadly being in austrailia getting a good price on shipping will be hard and i don't think auggies does non USA orders.

Auggies' 10mini lots...

2 units of small bipeds, 1 unit skeletons, 1 unit zombies, 1 unit of melee humaniods, one unit of missle fire humaniods, one unit of heavy armor, one unit of hooded humaniods, one unit of reptilan bipeds. The rest should be bought individually unless you need / want a lot of variety or feel WYSIWYG is important.

Abyssal Skulker x10 Angelfire #51 D&D minis for small 'things'
Direguard x10 Angelfire #38 D&D minis for skeletons
x10 Aasimar Fighter #01 War of the Dragon Queen D&D for armored troops.
Troglodyte Barbarian x10 Underdark #59 D&D minis Green enough for lizard men and hands are free allowing for weaponswaps.
Goblin Adept x10 Deathknell #34 D&D minis goblins, nuff said.
Orc Savage x10 Deathknell #57 D&D minis pricey, though really beefy.
Bloodhulk Fighter x10 Deathknell #46 D&D minis sweet figs IMHO lard-ass zombies rock.
x10 Free League Ranger #16 Blood Wars

I actually agree. I just ordered one pack of blood war and am considering picking up more.

They are way pricey. For my money, too pricey to fill out all your "creature representation" needs. But I think it's reasonable to get the counter collections first to give you what you need, and then get a few minis -- plastic or metal -- to fill out the kewlness factor.

The Counter Collection is good for a lot of weird out-there monsters that I'll use only once or twice.

Unfortunately for me, a lot of the creatures that are frequently used in my campaign (and sometimes in large numbers) are also ones that are frequently used in most other peoples campaigns. Hence the are hard and/or expensive to get a hold of. :(

The revised basic box set may be the most economical way for me to get a large dragon for example. At least I can use the other minis that come with it too.

I have just discovered that Auggie's don't ship outside the US.

Does anyone have an e-mail address that I could contact the owner on so that I might be able to plead my case to an exception?

I looked all over the site and couldn't find a way to contact them. The only possible way required me to be an e-bay member. I'm am (shock and horror) not currently a member.

Thanks,
