I just picked up Far Distant Future Publishing's new PWYW PF1 product,
Marvelous Monsters: Living Pit (affiliate link), and I'm quite pleased with it.
I'm sure that by now, people are getting tired of hearing me
fanboy out over FDFP's releases, to which all I can say is that I'll stop being so enthusiastic when they stop putting out good material. If past experience is anything to go by, that probably won't happen for a long time (or, hopefully, ever).
In this case, what we have is one of those products which, after you read it, you sit back and think "why didn't anyone do this before now?" Because the titular monster—which is quite obviously a sarlacc with the serial number filed off—is one that seems to lend itself toward gamification. In this case, I suspect that I'm overlooking some other takes on this same creature; my guess is that those moved a bit further from their inspiration in an attempt to put their own spin on things. But here, the homage looms large indeed.
I'll note that, unlike most monsters in PF1, the living pit has a speed of 0 feet, which along with its Itelligence score of 1 means that enterprising PCs can easily kill the thing from outside the range of its tentacles. But the product notes that this creature is as much a location-based hazard as it is a monster, and if some PCs are ambushed by it or are pushed into it (say, by a local crime boss from his floating barge), then simply escaping it should be worth experience points as if they defeated it.
Despite not being a fan of much (or virtually anything) of what Star Wars has done in the last few years, this call back to a classic creature was enough to put a smile on my face, and given that the purchase price for this product is entirely voluntary, I remain pleased with what FDFP is doing.
