What is Awakened?

That's a very general question, perhaps you can narrow what you're asking?

Anyway, the only 'awakened' that I know off hand would be the druid spell Awaken on page 177 of the PHB. Since it affects plants and animals, such a plant or animal that had been affected by the spell would be called awakened.

Ealli is correct. When a reference to something being "awakened" is made, it generally means the creature is either the recipient of the spell Ealli mentioned, or is simply sentient, without any other explanation. Mr. Ed - if you remember him - would be an Awakened horse, for example.

Awakened creatures are generally non-magical beasts (i.e. wolf, bear, hawk, shark) that have had their intelligences magically enhanced to a sentient level. They can then gain class levels.

This can happen through a number of methods. The druid spell mentioned in the post above... godly intervention.... reincarnation, etc...

I'm sure there are other methods for awakening creatures as well.

One of my favorite villains that I created was Ursog, an awakened Dire Bear with 8 Druid Levels. You should have seen the look on my PC's faces when I introduced him....utterly priceless. :D

lol.

"I can sense it's a druid. I have this special scroll that will force him to leave his wild shape. I'll cast it, followed by a silence, just when you have closed in on him. That should make this easy work for you. You guys might not be able to take on a dire bear in closecombat but don't you worry. One of those skinny druids should be no problem. Ha, I can't wait to see the look on his true face."

-Captain Gregorys last knowen words as reported by one of his surviving men.
