Drizzt just
oozes "kewl." That's what I hate about him.
From what I remember of the first two trilogies (I more or less gave up on the whole shebang after that), he glowers a lot and doesn't talk much (and when he does, it's either some snide comment or terrifically insightful revelation). As someone else said, he's
twice outcast: neither his birth society nor his adopted society really accepts him. He's angst-ridden, guilt-ridden, and a victim of other people's "bad thoughts." These traits of his seem to substitute for character.
Of course, when he gets into a fight, he's completely unstoppable. The only trouble Drizzt ever seemed to get into, to my recollection, was deciding what unbelievably cool martial-arts-movie maneuver to use next. Yeah, okay, he's a bit winded after the fight, and maybe he got scratched up a bit. But in the next scene, he's fine (and probably wracked with angst, if not angst
and guilt, about the fight).
The pet cat is just icing on the cake. I mean, who
doesn't want to be able to send an oversized black panther into battle against the enemy? Essentially, it just seems to me as though we're supposed to accept that Drizzt's
bloody well perfect, and his only problem is that the whole world is out to "get him."
And don't get me started on Elminster.
