What is it about Drizzt that you just can't stand?

As many have said, he's untouchable. He's a curvy-bladed lawnmower of humanoids. He doesn't even have to be greatly wounded, but a broken bone, *anything* would safice.

That's why I miss ol' Zak. That man could lay down a butt-whoopin' on Drizzt any day o' the week, right up to the very end. However, I do remember Drizzt being injured on a couple occassions at least.

Anyone remember the fight with the Hasted Giant Strength Ogre from Sea of Swords? That wasn't an easy fight at all. How about the fight with Arty inside the Crystal Shard? That fight ended up with Arty's fist in Drizzt's chest. Sure, it was cheating, but it happened. Or better yet, how about the fight with Arty while in the Underdark? Got his but whooped there. Oh, and then there was the torture he received while in Baenre's (sp?) fortress. That wasn't pretty. And finally, Drizzt completely got his butt kicked by the he/she chick in Sea of Swords, hands down.

I don't know. Doesn't bug me that much.

Thanks for giving sneak peaks in Sea of Swords, Kr. ;)

Yes, Drizzt gets hurt. I don't dispise the guy, but it takes a serious BBEG to put a hurt on him. Then again, considering the stats posted, he *is* a 16th level character, so he Should cleave through enemies with the flick of a wrist.

And, I'm more a fan of Arty, myself.

Are you a Cunningham fan, Krenyolds?

I've never read any of the FR fiction, so my distaste of Drizzt comes firmly from the number of good drow he inspired. And of the ones I've seen, they were either one dimensional at best, or pure munchkin at worst. So the company he keeps is herdly encouraging.

But the reason I don't read gaming fiction might shed light on the distaste for all the characters in the novels. From what I've heard/seen, those things read like some stranger from a convention coming up to you and telling you about his character. "And my character's so cool, you see, because he's a drow, but he's good, and he absolutely rocks with two swords, and... hey, wait, where are you going!"

In a word 'twink'.

Drizzt reminds me of the dozens, and I do mean dozens, of those socially retarded enthusiats (don't get me wrong, some of them are my friends) who like to talk about how cool there character is and go on and on for it for like hours whenever they find out you are a gamer. Back in the day, and I mean like way back in the day before I'd even heard of this RA Salvatore dude, invariably this character was one of two different types:

a) A CE half-demon half-elf vampire fighter/thief/mage werebear. (Invariably followed by the declaration that alignment is too restraining and should be done away with.)

or

b) An angsty drow elf ranger (if not multiclassed) outcast with cat like grace and the ability to fight with two weapons at once and like 19's in all his stats.

Both would provoke any role player worth his salt to just smile and nod, and then turn to his friend at the earliest oppurtunity and go 'What a twink!'. 'I can't believe his DM let him get away with that!' 'Elves can't be rangers!' 'Drow Elf isn't even a PC class! (before UA)/'Drow Elf PC's don't get thier racial bonus abilities! (after UA)'/'I can't believe the DM let him be Drow anyway!', 'Oh NO, not another one (after a few years of this)' And remember, back then, when you did away with class level limits and restrictions, essentially non-humans were getting all thier extra powers for free. So, the impetus was to play the race with the most powers the DM would let you get away with. Drow was HIGH HIGH HIGH on that list. CLEARLY, the player was just min/maxing as best he could and the rules be damned if they were going to get in the way of his ultimate killing machine. CLEARLY, the selection of Drow had NOTHING to do with wanting to explore some deep philosophical question (and man this shows in RAS's writting) and alot to do with having the biggest baddest character you could imagine. You got the feeling talking to these guys that some sort of weird ego masturbation was occuring in thier skull as they discussed thier character's (many rule breaking abilities) with you and you just wanted to run away as fast as possible.

So, when I see Drizzt, I basically see him as RAS's twink character and all the stories about him as basically RAS being paid to ego masturbate.

And for the record, Drizzt was never anything like an original idea. Sure there have been lots of clones, but Drizzt was himself a clone if only in the manner of thinking that created him (I'm not saying RAS copied someone else, but he might as well had).

I don't like the fact that he's billed as some master swordsman. He's a cheap hack.

Sea of Swords: Some crazy elf decides that Drizzt should die. Although the elf isn't a wizard, he knows that combination of 4 spells can take him out. And his plan works perfectly, except that Drizzt's annoying friends give him a healing potion that they jsut picked up. If any fool with a ring of spell storing can take you out, then you suck.

BTW, elves can be rangers, and Drizzt lost all his drow abilities except for darkness and infravision.

LOL. I've never read any of the books, and the one time I thought I'd give it a go, I just couldn't get past the name...

Bah! As someone who read all of Elizabeth Moon's books about Paxe Pasken Pasenk that paladin chick, I find "Drizzt" quite tame by comparison.
